e4od to 5speed?

I have 90 bronco with an e4od.I want to swap it out for a 5 speed that will fit.It has a 5.8 liter with e4od. I am needing to know what parts vehicles I can get the parts from to do this swap, years models, etc.I think I know the basics of it but i want to know what vehicles I can get these parts from.If possible and someone knows can you post this list back.I really need the specifics on this.My e4od is toast and I can get a deal on a 90 or so f250.It doesnt matter if it is super strong 5 speed because I dont offroad a lot just hunt. Any input would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

The ZF from a 4x4 equipped with the 5.8 (or 300, if such a beast exists).

Domestic Truck Tranny Guide

F 250/350 would be the primary place to look, starting with '87.

Your engine computer is going to miss the E4OD, so you need a stick model computer too.

And pedals.

Maybe cross member.

FWIW, I'd redo the E4OD.

Thanks for the info.I hope I wont need the computer, because im going to leave the mlps hooked up and tied to inside of frame rail. That should trick the computer into thinking it is in nuetral. Is the 5.8,300 and the 5.0 the same bell housing pattern? Will the existing xfer case bolt right up?Did the 90 bronco come factory with a factory 5 speed? That would be easy swap.

you can use your current computer just fine.

same bellhousin also.

to make the swap easier i would grab the tranny/tcase together if you can. i think you can find a few 90's with a 5 speed M5OD but its not that great and is marginal behind a 302 let alone a 5.8.

stick with the ZF

All you need for the MLPS is a 700 ohm resistor across the "neutral" contacts in the MLPS connector. This will make the computer "think" the truck is in neutral at all times. I've been told this isn't even critical but I've seen what happens when an E4OD fails. Whether the computer reacts or not was more than evident. Truck refused to rev over 2500 rpm which would suck under normal driving conditions. So, if it was mine to do, and I didn't have a computer from a truck with a manual transmission, I'd be putting the resistor in.

Nope, different bellhousing pattern. It's the M5OD anyway and you really want the ZF.

I'll be going with the zf.I tore into my e4od that came out of my90 bronco,5.8 and as far as I can tell I don't even see any badly worn clutches.I have broken plastic pieces in my torque converter.Could that cause the vehicle to not move forward?I don't know what those pieces are.I guess the converter imploded.Either way I'm still doing the zf swap.Just for the heck off it what 5 speed came in 90 bronco that would bolt up to 5.8 liter.Just curious because a friend off mine found one that came out of a bronco from that year(90).By the way ,I found paperwork where aamco rebuilt the e4od in it in 97.The tranny should have all of the updates,am I correct on this? I might even build it up later to sale.

well aamco sucks so it doesnt suprise me one bit that it failed. the e4od though even with the upgrades is still valnerable if its not taken care of, over heats etc...

broncos with the efi 5.8 never came with a manual tranny. broncos with either the efi 5.0 or 300-6 came with an M5OD. this was a very weak tranny and prone to failure. this tranny would bolt up to your 5.8 but you would need to find a flywheel. the 5.0 and 300-6 flywheel wont work on the 5.8.

just get this thought out of your head, it will require all the same amount of work to do the swap and give you something that isnt very strong.

Don't know that first hand, I swapped computers. :)
Did quite a bit of re-wiring for the new setup too.

Now isn't this a pretty sight... ?

Hence the reason for the resistor across the neutral contacts for the MLPS. This "tells" the computer the engine doesn't need to wind down to compensate for up-shifting in the automatic.

Hence? ;)

But that's really cool to know the resistor can correct the idle, thanks. :)
