I have an 05 F250 with about 68K on it. Recently took it to the dealer for a coolant leak which appeared to be coming from the coolant reservior. I changed the cap myself first and still had the problem. The dealer said the coolant reservior was warped where the cap screwed on. So $800 later it was fixed until about a month later I started to overheat again. I take it back in and now they say it is the EGR cooler. After doing some research I find out that a classic sign of the EGR going bad is puking coolant out of the reservior. So my question is does anyone think that the EGR was bad in the first place and they knew it and because the EGR is covered under warranty they told me it was the reservior so that they could get some money out of me? I am a fairly new diesel owner so I could be way off base here. Anyone with ideas? Thanks

Is it possible? It is possible, just based on what I'm reading here though, I don't know if that's the case or not. More then likely the oil cooler is messed up as well. Typically the oil cooler being clogged will cause the EGR cooler to fail as well. Not knowing what all they did when they looked at your truck, I don't know if they knew ahead of time it was the EGR cooler or not. It is possible though. However, it is also possible that they were just doing the "easy" stuff first and hoping that was the issue before they got more "indepth" with the big engine repairs.
Dealers have a tendency to do that sad to say. If they're telling you it's the egr cooler now make sure you have em replace the oil cooler to as that is usually the main culprit. Have em check the head gaskets to or u can do that yourself with a nitrite kit from napa. I don't know to much about the kit but hopefully someone will chime in here that does. Coolant filter would be going on right after these repairs if it was me. There's alot of stuff to read in the tech folder on these trucks that's very useful and it'll give you a good idea of what to look for and what is going on with your truck. Don't let it overwelm you cause it'll make you nervous at first. You'll want to sell the truck. These are some great trucks once you get the bugs worked out and you came to the right site for asking questions. These guys are great on here. Welcome to fte!
thanks Tex and Shawn. I am going to call the dealership right now to make sure they are going to replace the oil cooler too. Its funny what you said about selling the truck Shawn, because I was just thinking that. This is the 3rd time in as many months that it has been in the shop. And when I was there last time I took the '11 F-350 out for a test drive and almost bought it right then and there. Anyway thanks for the replys.

Thought u might be thinking that. About selling it that is. I bought my 05 used from my cousin with 42000 on it. Didn't have a clue about these trucks until I found this site and boy when I got to reading I was ready to sell it but I love the truck. I did just about everything this site said to make it as reliable as possible and try and get as much mileage as I can with this truck. I deleted my egr but didn't change the oil cooler and wishing I did now. Never have had a major problem with the truck so far, knock on wood. There's trucks out there that are problematic and some with none at all. If ya love the truck then I'd do some of the mods and keep up with maintence on it before you go doing anything drastic as trading it in. Good luck with it. Hope everything works out for ya on it.
If your planning on keeping the truck it would be worth the extra $ to buy a upgraded EGR cooler and have the dealer install that instead of the factory one. Last I heard there was a TSB out that they change the oil cooler and the EGR cooler at the same time which is good because the oil cooler causes most EGR cooler failures.
