EGT WOES

OK here is my delimna. Running empty at 1500 rpm my egt's are around 600 degrees. When I crack down on it to pass they climb quickly to 1200. I have an Edge Evolution on the truck as well as a 4 inch exhuast with a muffler delete pipe and an Airaid cold air intake. I have replaced the intercooler boots and the turbo doesn't have any side to side or in and out movement it feels great. Before I installed the gauges (before the Evolution) at times the check engine light would come on briefly when pulling my 22,000 lb trailer up a steep grade. This happened probably 20 times more or less. When the light came on I would let out of it immediatly. I have checked the exhaust up pipes for leaks and there isn't any. I have been told that it may be the exhuast valves or possibly the pistons. I wouldn't think it was the pistons as I believe that there would be a lot of extra oil going through the turbo and the truck would realy smoke as it doesn't.I am at my wits end trying to figure out what is the problem.Any help would be great.

1200 isn't really too hot, most likely due to the Edge though. What does it do stock?

1200 is ok, much more is not and not for long. Benefit of the insight is now you know what is going on.

Maybe you should crank it down a notch, especially when towing.

First off, the AirRaid MAY have caused your problem....dusted the turbo. The factory intake is already the best. How long have you had the AirRaid on there?

Second, using the Edge will also void any warranty you MIGHT have after replacing the intake. 1200 degrees is not really that bad - esp on a grade like you are talking about....Do you know why the light came on...have you had the codes read? What were they? What year/model truck do you have?

Helps if we know what engine. Your profile says 2001, so it would be a 7.3, correct? An A/M intake is common on that engine and I think the comment above was probably with a 6.0 in mind. Regardless, the CEL coming on under a hard tow is not normal or good, and you really need to know what code was thrown. Could be as simple as a fan clutch not providing enough air flow.

No sweat. OP needs to always let people know what we are working on.

I mention overheating because that is one case where a CEL light will come on and then go off when the condition changes.

The engine is the 7.3 turbo diesel and there isn't any codes being thrown since I installed the evolution as I have it set at 1100 degrees. The turbo isn't spooling like it usedto. The problem existed before the addition of the evolution. I installed the programmer to help moniter the boost and egt's, trans. temps. aswell as to tell if any codes are being thrown. I purchased the truck used 5 years ago and it didn't have any upgrades on it. I installed a secondary gauge on it and the temps were the same. I always turn the OD off when towing. I just in the last 2 weeks installed a ATS trans. and a Banks torque convertor since the trans started slipping at 178,000 miles. I'm lucky to get 15 psi boost at full thottle with the programmer turned all the way up.

You might have more luck in the 7.3L forum.
