engine missing but idles fine

well i finally was able to get out and fix my truck. turned out to be one of three things. all i replaced. i put a set of autolight platnum spark plugs in her and . andf boy she needed em. the ones that came out were all worn and covered with carbon. a set of 8mm accel super stock spark plug wires on. did that and started her up. she ran fine but still was missing a little bit just not as bad as it was under load. what is the little diaphram looking thing on the vacume line between the carb and the distributor called and what is it for?????? the part number stamped onto it is D32E-AA and has a ford emblom stamped on it. anyways i had vacume going to it and not comeing out of it. i just took it out and put a little tube in place of it and toook the truck for a short drive and no more missing. i think it was a combo of all the stuff. on another note what causes the heavy carbon build up and how can i keep it from happening again to the new plugs????? during all this i have gottren my choke re-adjusted and cleaned the heck out of the whole carb (without disassembling it) i think this would help. thankls again for all the info. that is the reason why i love this site so much. every single one of us knows a ton of stuff about these old fords and we all help eachother out. (sorry for the lenght i had a lot to say)

I think that diaphragm thing is a delay valve that is supposed to restrict one way but not the other. (Slows the advance to prevent pinging and lets the advance drop off quickly when it needs to.) If it's running good you should be fine without it.
If everything is working correctly and the engine is getting up to a good operating temp (190°) the plug fouling should go away. Keep an eye on it just to be sure. Pull a plug out after 500 to 1000 miles and check.
Glad it's running better.
