I'm trying to get my ducks in a row to mock up a driving chassis. I think that I have neglected steering alltogether.
What I'm trying to do:
31 AA chassis
76 300 I6 engine
ZF S542 trans
31 fordor sedan body to make quad cab (eventually)
I want ALL FORD PARTS:
Where do I even start? I'm thinking manual steering box from a later 1 ton or 1.5 ton? My chassis has no steering box and I kind of feel like I might as well update the steering to something none worm geared. <-- that previous statment might or might not sound like I know what I'm talking about, but it just stemmed from some hot rod stuff and reading about general steering box stuff. The problem I'm having is the size and weight of the finished truck which I'm am estimating to be between 5-6 thousand. I've read articles about the F-1/F100 boxes but just don't know about the wieght issue. Having a hard time finding good documented info about larger ford trucks.
Gidday Scott, I rebuilt the factory steering on my '42 1.5 ton, it has 7.50x20 tyres, duels on rear axle, I don't mind manual steering (have it in my daily driver) with the factory set up everything will bolt together and work and less grief with authorities come registration time.Good luck, Steve.
