looking for any tips, tricks or items you know of that will add power, fuel economy and reliability to your idi. please put what it is, difficulty rating, how long it took to install, skill levil and price estimated or exact.
start out with a few i know of.
factory turbo setup, i got mine for $400. skill level was moderate, took 6 hours start to finish. to make it a little easier i installed a 1 1/2" body lift to give a little more clearance around the turbo.
intercooler $50 used, exhaust for piping included having them bend it up $150 skill level was low. super easy.
electric fan conversion.
that big stock sucker spinning has to rob a few ponies.
get it back by swapping it out should be worth the effort.
can't rate the skill level, cus i haven't done it yet.but the articles w/pics,and full instructions at OB looks pretty straight forward.
lol yeah.i don't think there is a pony to be found there, but i guess it has to take some amount of power to spin it.
soup bowl removal= super easy.more air is always a winner.felt in the seat or not, that has to be worth it.
not many will like it,
but swapping out to small tires was a great performance mod.lowers weight of tire, and being shorter lowers gearing.good one for those with 3.55's.
skill level = easy of course.

I hate the smaller tires on the back of mine. Mostly cus the backs are smaller than the fronts lol. But since their smaller they spin easier = getting stuck more lol. And my mpgs went down slightly.
there is also a custom cam for the idi from Russ (aka; type4)
skill level of cam swap imho- easy to moderate.though a little time consuming.more of a PITA for guys with turbo's though of course.
then there's the MOOSE pumps available from Mel @ OB.
baby/standard.
also matched injectors from Russ.
everything adds up.especially when your trying to tweak out ever bit you can to try and hit the hard to do RW 200hp mark.
(if you think 200 at the rear wheels is easy from the IDI,you better look at more dyno runs.it's not.)
you can head stud and mill the pistons for more boost.but with more boost, requires more fuel.expect to see fuel mileage closer to the 460 gas engine, than the typical IDI when doing this.(or at least halfway between the two somewhere.)
all i can think of right now.
custom exhaust is of course the number 1 priority imho.
that stock setup is poor and too small.
oreocreaming,
did you do a gear swap when you went to 42" sneakers?
if you have a 3.55 gear set,you would now have a real gear ratio of an extreme high 2.68:1
if you have 4.10's your still lacking a performance ratio with 3.09:1
with the added weight of the tires, and being 42" you really want a gear set of at least 5.13:1 go a bit lower if you can find 'em.i see 5.13's via just a quick search.that would get ya back between 3.55's and 4.10's at 3.87:1
but since you have the 5 speed OD,look around for an aftermarket set of about 5.50 or so(whatever is close.that put's you around 4.10's-*good performance ratio* at 4.15:1)-5.53's would get you 4.10's technically.
that would be the single most important mod for your truck.
unfortunately, due to the skill level and tools required,AND being a 4wd truck, you need to hire it done both front and rear.that will set ya back a few bucks, but your performance level increase will be drastic(the torque multiplication you get when gearing down,is far more important to note than just the rpms.)
Installing the injectors from russ and getting the timing set made a big difference in how my truck runs. Boost comes on sooner and the truck just pulls harder. I'm really hoping I will be close to 200rwhp on the 18th. My friend is gonna make a vid while it's on the rollers too.
factory 4:10's. performance is still good. i wanna step up to 4:56, no lower. i dont want to take away the workability of my truck with lower gears. all i need is to sheer the pinion gear cause its so thin. i never get into 5th anymore lol. its a good rate in 4th gear goin 55 at around 1900rpm or so. and im saving for the gears, cause im going to have them installed along with a pair of arb air lockers. 4k just for all that. i wanna do the moose ip and injectors big time. had not heard of the cam upgrade. when i have that turbo idi built i might look into that for it. for sure arp head studs would be on it. also the ats turn down and down pipe. give it a little more boost.
When you look at adding power you have to consider several things as a system.
A turbo with the stock intake and exhaust will add power.
But if you want to get the full potential out of the turbo, you are also looking at exhaust and intake mods.
If the fuel system is old and tired, you may also be looking at a new IP and injectors.
Any of the supporting mods can give you more power and probably higher MPG's, but don't expect a huge difference from any one or more of them.
