AirBag Indicator Light Trouble Code

Once again, my ignition switch acted up... once again, I took it out, adjusted it and it works fine.

However, now the "Supplemental Restraint Indicator Light" (the little yellow one in the lower left corner of the instrument panel) is flashing what I figure must be a trouble code.

It flashes five times, then two times (52) for three cycles and then glows steady on.

Anyone know what this code indicates? I tried disconnecting the battery (to see if the sensor would reset). Is there another place to reset the sensor? I have a feeling the sensor is just reporting that it received voltage when it wasn't expecting it (due to the wacky ignition switch), and I hate to take it in and have them start hanging parts on me...

Thanks for any info!

A Code 52 indicates lost or low battery voltage to the airbag circuit. To clear this code, you either need a diagnostics tester ($$$), or turn the key 256 times. The codes stay in memory for 255 turns of the key, as long as the problem isn't detected again.

Thanks for the advice. What constitutes a "key turn?" Do I have to wait for the light to start blinking? You guessed it, I turned the stupid key 256+ times (in rapid succession) and the sensor light still blinks.

Coincidentally, every five rapid key turns causes the power door locks to lock and then unlock- what's with that? Also, apparently when you disconnect the battery you also reset the engine sensors. The Expy stalled out on my twice last night after the battery disconnect experiment (however, the RPM sensor seems to be doing a better job now).

Thanks for the info!

As mentioned above the condition for the lamp must still exist for the light to remain illuminated. Time to get into the connectors and find why there is low battery power to the system.

Every time you reset your ECS all recent driving history is erased. It is suggested that after you restore power you should drive your truck for at least 10 miles with at least half of that open throttle (highway speed). You should restart your engine at least once during this 10 miles too. This will give your ECS good averages to use until it gets up to the 80 driving sessions it uses to filter the current driving experience.

Note that resetting the ECS will erase all ODB-II codes from your computer as well. If your lamps are still on, you still have a problem.

Thanks for the information! I can't imagine there is a continuing problem (like I said, I'm almost positive the problem was encountered because the ignition switch acted up).

I am trying to purchase one of the "Ford Factory Repair Manuals" on CD that I see on eBay all the time. If the sensor isn't overly $$$ (and if it looks like something I might be able to do without getting into too much trouble), I will probably try getting a new one. The problem with the ignition switch made the truck act like the key was still in and on the "on" position even when the key was actually removed. Perhaps this resulted in voltage going to the sensor when it wasn't expecting it- thus damaging it or something. Who knows?!

Please pay attention here. It seems you have a problem with the air bag system. While you may not think so the continuing illumination of this indicator points to a problem. An important thing to note it that these are explosive devices and should not be triffeled with unless you are prepared to accept the consequences of tinkering (or are a certified mechanic). If you have a problem in this area and do not know your way around the air bags take the truck to an SAE repair facility. You could be seriously injured by poking around these devices.

When your door locks unlock/lock after five turns of the key, that merely indicates the remote unit is in program mode. You have probably erased the remote entry codes, and if your remotes don't work, you will need to reprogram them.

As for the airbag, there is another problem somewhere. I would first check all the fuses for a blown one. If you can't find the problem there, I would take it in to a shop to troubleshoot the airbag system. I have a good deal of experience with cars and trucks, but I am still not willing to mess with air bag systems. If you accidentally deploy the airbag, you can not only get hurt, but it's very expensive to have the bag replaced or repacked, whatever they do.

Thanks for the warning. Having witnessed an air bag deployment up close and personal, I've been giving serious thought as to whether I want to mess with this particular project...

I do think I'll check the fuses though, and if they are all fine, I'll just run it out to the dealer and prepare to get screwed!

The transmitter for the door locks still seems to be working fine, so it must still be programmed... good to know what I did if they stop working though!

Thanks again,
Pete

OK so I'm getting a 36 SRS code. My buddy is trading in his 2000 Expy EB for a new F-150 and I wanted his seats because they have TV's in them. We have identical trucks, so we swapped the seats out. After starting mine, the SRS light started flashing the 36 code. So I did some inspection and he forgot to hook up the connector under the passenger seat. All hooked up now, double checked the driver side, but still getting the 36 code (4 times then steady). What is the 36 code and how do I clear it? Or could this be a bigger problem?

Also a 2k, not sure about the production date, but fixed the problem on my end at least. Going back and looking at everything, my seats had some type of lookback or resistance connected at the yellow connector, and his actually had a pigtail that went up inside the seat somewhere. So I took my two connectors back and plugged them in and it worked, light went out. I wasn't going to disassemble his and I know if I pulled the bulb out so the dealer didn't know about the problem, the chime would start coming on. So I took his Air Bag bulb out and wrapped it in electrical tape and stuck it back in. Dealer took the truck no problem and paid him above book value for it. I guess his had side air bags and mine didn't and that's where the incompatibility came in.

similar problem

Hey Guys, I have a 2003 expedtion, My wife is short and I am tall so we are constantly adjusting the driver seat, recently the airbag light came on and blinked and then steady, also one day my wife said the seat belt dinger ran all the way to work and she had her seat belt on. I got under the driver seat and unplugged and replugged all the connectors i could reach, the problem seemed fixed for a couple of weeks and now the air bag light is blinking again. I tried unplugging and replugging the connectors again but the air bag light is still staying on. any suggestions.
