Instrument Cluster Gauges

1987 F150 with 300. Cluster has Speedo, tach, oil pressure, volt meter, coolant temp and fuel level.

Aight I'm just trying to get a confirmation on this. I know my gauges are inaccurate. I'm trying to see if I need to be swapping the cluster out, the sending units, or a combination of both.

I KNOW the oil pressure sending unit is bad.

What I was told to do was to ground the wires with Key On Engine Off. Now should the needle peg or just move towards High/Hot/etc?

Both the oil pressure and coolant temp needles moved towards High and Hot respectfully, but stomped well short. Does that signal a bad cluster? Turn the key off and back to on and they'd inch forward more.

As for the gas tank, well I'm thinking this gauge is for a 12 gallon tank, cause it shows full at around 12 gallons and I have 19 gallon tanks. So that's officially inaccurate too. New tanks and pumps, and a 19 gallon mid tank came off...

Most clusters have something called a voltage regulator that puts out a fairly steady voltahe to the gauges. This keeps them from changing with the battery voltage.

It's possible that this part is bad, which would screw up at least some of your gauges. Another possibility is a bad ground.

To see what should happen when you ground the signal lines, I'd suggest a quick look at a manual -- usually they describe it. Quite often you can find them at your local library.

It would make sense that it's universally on the supply side, as your providing more than adequate ground paths when contacting the motor directly w/ the connectors. They should peg the guage over.

Yea none of my gauges peg except gas and that's cause I have brand new pumps/sending units.

This cluster is no good.
