My upgrade from the M50D M5R2 to a ZF-S542 is proceeding, and I've just been confronted with some conflicting bolt-up information.
Ford parts numbers for both the F150 & F250 4.9L flywheels are supposedly identical. The transmission supplier (Greg Miller, High Impact) says there's just an extra set of bolt holes farther out on the flywheel and that after dressing the flywheel it will bolt right up.
For some reason the machine shop thinks that the new clutch riding over the old holes will lead to premature clutch failure, and recommends using a different flywheel, probably requiring a different starter. This sounds really odd to me.
If Ford wasn't worried about the extra holes, should I be?
Is there some other step I should be considering, like beveling the hole edges so that they're less abrasive? Many thanks.
bump... maybe it's just me but why didn't you get the origional fly wheel that was behind the ZF to begin with. I would have pulled the ZF and had the ZF's origional flywheel resurfaced so I could do the swap all in one afternoon. JW...???

I told the transmission seller that I wanted a complete bolt-up solution, so that option was not offered to me since the transmission seller assured me they were identical parts, and that all I'd have to do would be to get it surfaced.
OK: It turns out that this was a miscommunication on the part of the driver that took the flywheel to the machine shop. Many thanks, and sorry for the false alarm.
