looking for input from similar trucks. I have a v10 crew 4x4 long bed auto 3.73 gears. the only mods I have are a custom ypipe. just changed plugs, new SOS coils, fuel filter. I don't drive hard and only get 10 mpg.
basically looking to justify a 5 star custom .
do you guys with a 5 star see a improvement in mpgs?
I have had my 5 star custom tune in my X for about two weeks now. I keep it on the performance 87 tune unless towing. The mileage has been noticeably better, slightly, but still better. I haven't even tried the economy tune yet! My Excursion has the V-10 and 3.73 gears like your truck. Around town I get between 10 and 12 and over the road I get 14-16MPG, depending on how much I can keep the right foot out of it! Hope this helps. And by the way, Mike at 5 Star is awesome to deal with, very informative and professional! I recommend you give him a call with any concerns, he's very informative, and no pressure to buy.
That could be true, I have not tried the economy tune yet. Before the 5 Star tune I was getting about 10-11 in town and about 13-14 over the road. Again, not a huge gain, but still a little better. Like my wife says, it just seems like the truck is not working as hard to do the same job.
I have a 2000 all stock except the 5 star tuner. I was getting 10.13 to and from work before and 10.58 with the econo tune. Thats about 7.5 miles one way.. hwy was 12.4 stock.. 13.155 econo... Its was a dog with the econo tune, so I bumped the timing up 2 to 4* at different spots then got 10.81 to and from work which was .68 better than stock but .23 better than the econo tune. and Hwy went up to 13.89 with my tune from 13.155 on the econo thats .73 better than the econo, and thats 1.49 better than stock.
When I get around to it I'll be putting my headers on and new plugs then I'll get a power tune for it with headers. I only got the econo stock and with Y pipe, and towing with Y pipe. So I'll have to get a new one for what I'll have then...
Just 2 to 4* and changing shift points and pressures made a big difference...
I think its worth getting a tuner from 5 star...
I noticed no change with the 5-star tunes, but that's either all highway (16+), or stop-and-go (5+) (yes, 5!)
One big trip I took with Mike's 87 octane tow tune, and I got 14.5, pulling about 2-3K in a trailer (not aerodynamic at all, being there was a 1960 F-series cab on it, backwards), and another 1K in the bed, through Pennsylvania, into Upstate NY, and NEVER EVER caring about the mileage, caring more about getting there on time, keeping up with traffic, passing trucks, pulling hills, you name it. I was very surprised at 14.5

10mpg I might start trying to figure out if something is wrong if thats the best you can get driving it easy. I've never got that low even pulling 7-8k. However I dont get the highs either that it seems the earlier 2Vers get... I can baby it to death and get consistantly in the low 14's (dash might say right around 15 but it reads .7 high) I have never once actually broken 15mpg hand calc. I'm looking into the 5 star myself but cant spend the money right now. But when I do, know that I document every single fill up for the life of the truck so far so I will report back the changes. For starters I plan on 87eco, 87 performance, and 91 performance (or whatever the high octane one was).
Always dream of better MPG, just won't happen. get 13-15 in town 18.5 on the road at
74 MPH with cruise. 2003 f250 XLT RC 6 speed, 3.73LS, BFG AT 265/75/16, K&N CAI,
high flow cat, Magnaflow cat back, SPD Y pipe. Headers and a 5 Star tune are still a dream.
Drive it like you just stole it! Theres enough Kia's and Toyota's saving gas for our
V10's. gas is up $3.96 with added salt water.
trying to save a little $$.
I don't know what else to do. air filters new, cleaned the maf and throttle body. I disconnected the battery after the coils, plugs, o2 sensors etc. still 10 mpg. used to be 12-13 mixed. no codes. ????

Hmm well I am no expert SD troubleshooter butjust out of curiosity did you check for brakes/parking brake hanging up... must be something going on there especially if you used to get 12-13 which sounds pretty normal for the V10.
Always want better MPG's. Wish in one hand, crap in the other , see which hand fills
first. I do get 13 to15 in town 18.5 on the road. Has been this way since I've owned it.
Had a 91 f150 4.9 6cyl. that got about the same. Not complaining we always want
better, at $2.96 a gal. it's a rip off.
I have never seen 16+ on the highway the average hand calculated for mine over a few years has been 12.7 with everything stock except tires. I agree that that 10 is abnormally low so something has to be going on.
