96 E4OD error code

I am throwing code P1728(transmission slip error), the OD light is blinking, and it's shifting hard. One shop told me to rebuild and another told me it could be many things and didn't enunciate. When the codes are cleared it runs very smooth until the light blinks again. I've noticed a significant decrease in my mileage and it seems like my cruising rpm's are slightly higher and a greater fluctuation noted on rpm's when going up and down hills on the highway. Are the rpm's higher from the engine compensating for a slipping tranny? I don't feel it slipping but it seems like this would make sense. And I expect the fuel mileage is related to the higher rpm's.

Does anyone have any advice on what to check? Could the solenoid block cause that much trouble? If I do need a rebuild, how logical is it for me to do at home? I'm trans ignorant but very mechanically inclined. I've taken on many major projects with success but none as complex as an auto tranny.

Please advise. Thanks in advance.

not being a tranny man my self I have worked on a few with mixed results
sounds like the trans is going into limp mode-try a few other trans shops
these electrics on those trannys are a pain in the rear
do a search on the trans code -all my books are older and don't show that code
I personally have had bad experiences with the electrics on my E4Od transmission
you need to get the problem fixed soon -with it slipping if the trans isn't in need of a rebuild it soon will be

The slightly higher RPMs, hard shifting, and blinking OD light all point to the torque converter not locking up. If left unlocked for long periods of time, you will overheat the trans and kill it. I would stop driving it before you completely destroy it. The problem is likely in the solenoid pack.
