Well.. another day another problem lol.... latlely ive been hearing a pretty noticiable hummin from the rear end around 62-67 then it goes away or if i u let off the gas it goes away almost like a pinion bearing ..... i alway thought the 10.5's were good rear ends? i lonly have 133000 miles on my truck changed the diff fluid at 90k cuz my pan rotted out.. so replaced it with the 08 style.. and when i turn i get a clunking.... sometimes? someone mentioned that 02 had bad rear ends and its the carrier bearins go bad in them? i dunno just gettin back from road trip from florida and back.. doesnt seem any louder.. i dont know what to do just i have a buddie with a used one thinkin about just replaceing it i know rebuilding them is very expensive??? i dunno any imput would be great... thanks!
It seems like I have the same thing. Mine is more of a light vibration/rumble. I am fixing the easy stuff to eliminate any other possibilities (balance driveshaft, replace U-Joints, replace wheel bearings). I don't know much about diagnosing the internals of the rear diff, sorry. If it was a pinion bearing, I would think the noise would go away if you remove the rear driveshaft and drive around in front wheel drive (if the vibration is still there, then it isn't the driveshaft or pinion bearing). If you then remove the rear axle shafts, and you still have the noise, it isn't any of the internals (gear noise, carrier bearings (I think that is what they are called???)), and is most likely the wheel bearings. Hopefully someone else will chime in if my methods aren't correct.
well i have been through it all already balanced drive shaft new u joints new midshaft bearing.... if you let off the gas it goes away its your rear end...im just wondering who else out there with this problemm cuz i thought the sterling 10.5 were known to be good.. lol well 133,000 miles and its hummin i dont think thats very good....
I too have the same issue. Re-tubed and balanced driveshaft with new U-Joints. Bearings seemed OK, no play in wheels. I notice mine mostly above 65 and it gets worse the faster I go. I have a one piece driveshaft, so no carrier bearing.... I too am at a loss...
the last 10.5 I changed has 250,000 miles on it and had never been opened. the 3rd member was floating about 1/2 inch side to side and chewing up the ring and pinion. they towed with it 4 or 4 months this way. I just swapped it with a used rear end.
mine,had a vibration,around 75 mph,found pinion shaft loose,took apart,rearend,found pinion shaft and carrier bearings bad,ordered new bearings from eastcoastgearsupply,went napa,they pressed on new bearings,put everything back together,no more vibration,truck has 186k miles
i have 133000 or so i bought it at around 117000 miles.
i have notaced a humming in mine like you said only on the pedal when i let off it goes away.
it drove me crazy at first i hate noise or rattles but now im like im not going to worry about it till it breaks.
sorry i could not help
i get some howl out of mine and it goes away when i let off the gas. im also at 130k or so... my ls sucks and im savin for a complete upgrage. my rear end guy says its ok, just keep an eye on it for now. hope this helps.
