Question Wiring Issues

I'm not an electrical guy and I have a truck with jacked up wiring issues. I got mystery wires every where. At this point I have no brake lights, tail lights, blinkers, marker lights, back up lights. The only thing that works is my headlights. When i got the truck all the wires out of the steering colum was just hanging. Had a local mechanic hook them back up under the dash, but i'm still no better off. All my fuses are good.
What kind of meter would I need to go through and test everything? The guy who hooked the wires back up was telling me that because the blinkers aren't hooked up the circuit is open so nothing will work. I had tail lights when I brought it in to him and now I don't. Don't think i'm taking it back to him.My interior light use to work, my cargo light worked now nothing works. Just the head lights.
I was crawling under it yesterday and I saw by the back of the transmission a plug just hanging, but I couldn't find where it plugged into. There was also a plug at the front of it too, but again have no idea where it goes. My speedo isn't working either I traced that back to the transfer case. Its hooked up, but maybe I just need a new one. Can anyone help me?

I had similar problems with one signal working, no brake lights, then nothing. Turns out that it was the turn signal switch. I replaced that and EVERYTHING is happy again. It's really amazing how much runs up through the column into that switch!

Yes - you need to remove the steering wheel. There are three screws and a plate that hold it down. You can get a new one for about $58.00 that will have wires that go all the way down through the column and into a plug under the dash. They make a kit to just repair the the turn signal cam, but there are about 6 or 7 wires (two for turn signals) the rest for everything else. If you are going to replace, remove at plug under dash (coming out by bottom of column (follow wires)), then cut off the plug (new ones come with pins that will go in old plug) tape a piece of string on it and pull it out from the steering wheel side. To install, reverse the process. I did this on mine and it worked great for fishing the wires through! I tried the cheaper $14.00 kit to replace the CAM and the two wires which you crimp on to your old wires, but mine failed. Being so, I then bought the whole assembly and replaced it all and it's happy. I got mine from ROCKAUTO.com, but there are several sites!
