1977 F150 4x4 with a 400 turning a C4 transmission? I didn't think any C4's were mated to the 335 engines. But when I checked the VIN plate, it's got a G for the trans code.
What problems have been experienced with this setup? Do I look for a C6 to have a beefier trans, or do I keep the C4 for "orginal rare value"?
Hmmm...a few questions: are you sure some previous owner didn't change the engine/transmission combo at some point in the past? Dumb question #1...have you checked the engine code to make sure it's really a truck that came from the factory with a 400? Dumb question #2...have you crawled under your truck to visually confirm that your transmission is really a C-4?
Not trying to insult you at all, here...but I'm with you. I've never heard of anything "smaller" than an FMX being installed behind a 400. For that matter, I've never heard of a 4WD C-4, either. But, I've been known to be wrong before!
Thanks, got it figured out. I bought the truck out of state, and I don't have it yet. I got confused checking the VIN codes, G was listed as a 3 spd auto. Next to it was a Z code for 1977 calling for a C6. I dunno 'bought that. But i asked the guy I bought it from to confirm, asked him to crawl under and count bolts. It's a C6 with 17 bolts on the pan.
Also, S code in the VIN number is for the 400, so it seems to be as it was from the factory.
