They can absolutely be cleaned, check out the links below for good info on EGR valves. One thing you might consider is whether or not you have the latest design valve. It can be distinguished by a pink dot on the actuator.
Cleaned mine this past weekend. Carb cleaner, shallow glass and a toothbrush. Make sure you swing by the dealership and grab a new gasket/o-ring kit (3C3Z-9P455-AB). Keep the solvent out of the weep holes.
Let us know what it looks like when you get it pulled.

Thanks for posting that part #. That will come in handy one day.
Shallow glass to fill with carb cleaner and let the valve soak. You don’t want the solvent to get up past the bolt flanges. When you pull it out and look on the underside you will see two little squarish holes (called weep holes) that allow any moisture, etc that collects in the electronics to vent. The old gasket is probably smashed pretty good and might take a little scrape to get it to lift off. The solvent isn't good for the solenoid or upper seal.
I'm new to the 6.0 as well but have been wrenching for quite a while.
thanks for the great info. last time ford changed it to the tune of 550 smackers. good cleaning is what is needed now. i can hear the difference in the exhaust...
Just did mine yesterday for the first time at 64k. Holy crap!! Bottom end was completely plugged (carbon) What are you guys using to clean the manifold?

Light wire brush and a vacuum. Got most of it off of the mating surfaces.
No prob. I was pleasantly suprised to see mine was very lighly coated in carbon and the manifold was dry as a bone. Guess I got a good one made on Wednesday......
ok...does the electrical connection on the top of the valve just pull out? Dont want to damage anything ya know
On the firewall side of the connection there is a clip that moves towards the firewall and then the plug comes straight up. The clip is part of the plug.
