Just did mine yesterday for the first time at 64k. Holy crap!! Bottom end was completely plugged (carbon) What are you guys using to clean the manifold?
The 03 manifold that is on my truck was so badly plugged that it took two days in the degreasing vat and a steam cleaner with a "0" nozzle on it to get most of the carbon out. It came off a wrecker that idled quite a bit and had only 150K miles on it. 2nd nastiest crap that ever came out of a running motor I've ever seen.
ok so far. got the bolts out. do they need to be torqued when reinstalled?
you work for ford by chance...great info..
Remember that the valve has to twist slightly to come out because of the bolt retaining ears and that they can be very snug or carboned in very badly. A lady's foot is very handy--the EGR valve puller is a POS, IMHO.
I would say no on the torque--just snug and remember that the manifold is aluminum. I worked for a Ford dealership (bodyshop parts) for 3 years and learned a lot of what I know about 6.0's from Spartan Matt who I actually met on this forum several years ago, but the real credit goes to all the folks that contribute to this forum on a regular basis:
I always tell folks that if you can't find it out about a Ford truck on this forum then the information might not even exist.
got it so it turns put cannot get it out so far...
A LITTLE (meaning a few drops) of PB Blaster around the base will help dissolve the carbon and lube the o-rings a bit, but as I said.....the carbon makes it a bear to get out. Pry FORCEFULLY but CAREFULLY.
I used a wire wrapped through the holes in the tabs, put a length of 1" dowel through and pried against the alternator. You are really just trying to squeeze the o-rings past their mating surfaces. Reinstalling takes a bit of force as well....
