Well, i am getting some of the problems and am guessing the Converter is going bad. I get teh blinking light and the hard shift after a period of driving and after talking to a reputable tranny shop specializing in the E4OD, it seems that mine is going to need replacing. Now this guy wants $4300 for his "towmaster" transmission, yet I have seen replacements on Ebay, converter included, for $600-900. My question is to anyone who has had theirs replaced. What was the cost ballpark and what can I expect? I don't want to spend nor can I spend 4 grand on a $2k truck for a damn tranny. Any input form you guys with more experience would help a great deal. Thanks for the input.
i had it done at a shop while i was out of town by a shop that was near where i blew the original trans. cost $3000 installed with a Ford re-man with the 97 upgrades
We are taking our FSB into a shop tomorrow get the engine replaced and the E4OD overhauled for about 1800.00.
Our trans is still running well, but since the truck will be down, we figured it will be a good time to overhaul.
I am sure an overhaul would be a good way to keep the cost down.
We are adding a deep pan to aid in cooling. Something else to consider.
I got the TCC code, I forget the number..I just know it was for Torque Converter Solenoid or Clutch Converter solenoid...something to that effect. Well great, I paid 2k for this truck and am going to end up paying more for a tranny than the truck is worth.
Before spending a serious outlay of cash like that pull the codes yourself and let us know. In many cases the issue is not the complete transmission but a problem with the solenoid pack or the VSS located in the rear end.
If the C6 came from the same engine group as the E4OD and it is also designed to fit a 4x4 it will fit. Is it stronger? That's a matter of much debate. I have had both in several different trucks. I'll stick with the E4OD myself. It's not exactly a simple bolt in project, but it is doable with a reasonable skill level and tool set.
when i bought my truck a 1996 f250-4x4-460 with the E4OD, the previous owner said it kinda of hesitated a little at 65 mph. otherwise it ran good. I had a trannt shop drop it and look and a snap ring came off. Since it was apart i had it rebuilt with upgraded parts, a shift kit, and a stronger torque converter. i told the guy i use it for towing. thaats what he suggested and what i knew from reading these forums. the cost was 1800-2000 for factory rebuild and with the other parts i wanted, shift kit, solenoid, torque converter, larger tranny cooler it was around 2800. It's been a year now of towing a 10,000lb toyhauler maybe 5-6 times a year and no problems. The only thing that kinda bugs me. is that it seems to go into lock up to soon. could be my 3.55 gears dunno. Had it serviced before warranty expired and everything is still top notch. Pulle dmy rig to Stagecoach festival no problem.
