Hello All, I have an 03 F250 6.0. Lately when towing my trailer I smell antifreeze for a short time and then it goes away. Only on acceleration.
I check for a heater core leak and did not notice anything. My coolant level is at the low mark. I have extreme turbo lag also and a harmonic vibration at idle in gear and in park. My fuel mileage is about 8 to 10. I took it to the dealer a few years back and the did some egr tube recall. After that my truck has never run like it use too. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Oh Yeah I have absolutely no engine modifications.

I tow trailers and fifth wheels for a living out of Indiana and experience the same issue. Except when towing on the flat mileage is
12-13. I have found that the cruise set on 63-65 produces the best results. Take the cruise off when approaching inclines and get out of the overdrive gears. Let the motor (turbo) do the work and dont over pedal it. Works fine for me and I do 10k a month with the 6.0. Egr maintenance or replacement is the key. Use Lucas cetane additive with every fill, 9 ounces does the trick. You will feel the difference in the pedal and the exhaust sound also.
Try this and let me know....fordfan spelled backwards is droffan

Actually FORDFAN spelled backwards is NAFDROF, but need I digress!
Thanks for the tip on the Lucas. I have been a product fan for a long time.
No residue that I can see. There looks like rust particles in the bottom. I was told not to use a fuel treatment because it hurts the injectors. If you guys use it I guess its safe.
Well took it in to ford. My degas bottle cap was bad so they replaced. Had them go thru and check egr and oil cooler also. Found 30 degrees difference between the EOT and the ECT. Bad Oil cooler = $2800.00 to fix. I have done everything to baby this truck since brand new. Only 7 yrs old and 73,000 miles and stock as it gets. I bought ext warr after two years because of the bad rap the 6.0 was getting and used it twice. Found out its expired and I have to Pay$$$$. So much for trying to cover my A$$$
It would probably be best to replace the other items. Maybe its just me but $2800 seams like a lot to replace/rebuild the oil cooler. A oil cooler rebuild kit cost $300 and the intake gasket kit cost ~$100 for the sake of argument say they use $400 in MISC materials. That means they are charging $2000 labor which would be 20 hours at $100 per hour.
I think they are taking you for a ride... you may want to get a price else where. I'm not sure if you are aware but you can also take the 6.0liter to an international dealer for repair since it is out of warrante. I don't know if they would be any cheaper but you could give it a try...
I had a problem while towing with the engine fan running and puking out the degas. Turned out to be the oil cooler plugged with sand. Repl oil cooler and egr but sealed the exhaust side of the new egr cooler with a freeze plug. No problems since, now at 102k. I did install a coolant sys filter and was still getting sand in the filter though after the 3rd one there is very little. Coolant is a clear golden color now. Unloaded the truck gave us 21.6 mpg without much a/c use over a 500 mile trip last week. Truck is stock other than the coolant filter and a boost guage. Harpooned the tank a few weeks ago and now hold 35 gal instead of 28. PM and I can send you photos of the crud in the oil cooler.
I'm doing mine on Friday. So far the parts bill is $711, but that includes all the fluids (VC-9, Coolant, Oil) and filters (Oil, Fuel and bought coolant filter kit). While I am in there I am replacing the turbo drain tube, HPOP screen, gaskets, and fuel pressure regulator. The costs do not include a new EGR cooler, mine is still good (only added 10 oz of water in 3 years)
I'm expecting probably 10-14 hours of work (I've never done this before) I would expect a shop to be far quicker. Even at 10 hours, that's over $200 / hr, sounds a little steep.
Well the service manager told me today that he is calling Ford to see if we can get this covered under warranty even though its expired. He told me that Ford sometimes covers the cost if you are a loyal customer......Any truth to that?
Ford replaced my oil cooler, intercooler, cac boots, rebuilt turbo, flushed
the oil and coolant systems and reflashed the ficm at 75k and six years.
That was one year out of warranty. I had to ask for help and was charged
$1500 co-pay. So I guess they help some. Don't know what out of pocket would have been.
