I have a 2000 F-150 4.6 with 146K and when its cool or cold out after starting it up upon idle the oil pressure will drop and the light comes on. Once you touch the accelerator and speed up the RPM's just a little, the pressure jumps back up and the light goes out. After a minute or so, everthing is back to normal. It runs smooth as could be when the light comes on. Could it be the oil pressure sensor going out or something different. If anyone has experienced anything like this, let me know.
I've cleaned the contacts and they worked for short while. I think the contacts inside the switch get moved around a little and they click together a little different and will quit again. The sensor is pretty inexpensive. I replaced mine after cleaning it twice. I have 153,000 miles on it.
I believe the sensor is an on- off switch set at 8 psi. AT 7 psi it reads zero. AT 8 psi or 20 psi, it reads half scale. YOu might be just a psi or two low. If you want EXACT, you need to screw a gauge on it and see what your really got.

Exactly---the stock gauges are really just sexy looking idiot lights. I run Stewart Warner oil gauges on all my trucks and my boat. Been using them since the 70's in fact. They're accurate, inexpensive and close to bullet proof...........
I believe you're describing the built in feature of the low oil temp sensor, I could be wrong, but that's exactly what it does... Check your owners manual. I freaked one cold morning thinking I'd lost pressure when in fact it was just telling me the oil was cold.

Hmmm---I know on my son's MR2 turbo he has a red light for low oil pressure and a yellow light for low oil capacity, plus a good oil pressure gauge. His yellow light will occasionally light up when he hits a sharp turn at 45 mph's........
