Help!!!! Rust

First off this is my first post....... A week ago I bought a 2010 F250 super duty..... Upgrading from a Chevy Tahoe.

So far I have been very impressed with everything about the truck.

This morning I was removing the front dealership tag and I looked under the front end and all I could see were parts covered in nothing but rust. I am no auto specialist by far but I know rust is not a good thing on a car or truck, especially after 500 miles.

I am headed back to the dealer in the morning but ( no offense) I dont really trust a dealer especially in this type of situation.

Any idea why this would happen? I have absolutely grown to enjoy this truck and am pretty pissed if this is a defect and parts need to be replaced and I have not even hit 1000 miles.....

Any advice or knowledge would be greatly appreciated.............

I have pictures but not sure how to upload here...... I will research and try to add shortly.....

I noticed when my truck was new, not everything underneath was painted, and has some rust when I brought her home.

Im fine with misc rust but an entire rod is rusted and the entire hub inside the wheel is rusted and for a truck maybe 6 months old at the most it just seems excessive......

I am mainly trying to decide if this is normal or if I should be concerned and bent out of shape over it.....

If someone can help me on how to upload pics I will put them up to help explain.

My mom's '03 Expedition did the same thing. It was just light surface rust... I'm sure it was just the moisture in the air and a little water from the road. It's just like a bare piece of metal left outside for a few days. Nothing detrimental... it can usually be wiped off with a dry rag. I'm pretty sure this is what you're experiencing, but I could be wrong.

My guess is this rig sat on the lot for a while, and rust will form quickly on bare metal parts when not being used. It should be fine now that you are using it.

My 2010, delivered to me right off the trailer as special ordered, exhibited the same as you describe. Most of the rust is on non-painted forged iron parts like the tie rod ends, spindles, knuckles, etc. The painted stuff is ok.

Its not the rust that bothered me, its the complete lack of grease fittings on the front end. Its Ford's famous "lubed for life" parts. Ha, Ha, Ha, generally, a SHORT LIFE, in my experience. Poor, poor design, period.

My 93 F150 had completely eaten ALL six of its U joints by the time it hit 40K (how convenient, just out of warranty) and all of its ball joints by 70K. I expect the same on this truck. The replacement parts w/ grease fittings are all still tight at 185K miles.

Other than that, its a great truck and I love it!

That is especially true in coastal climates. Here on the Oregon coast (within 1/2 mile of the ocean) I have seen new trailer hitch ***** rust OVERNIGHT!

Good luck with the dealer.

yea those parts come unpainted, its just a light surface rust that will never get worse..

if it really bothers you, get under there with a rattlecan of black paint and hit em..

its really nothing to get worried over..

in a ideal world all the undercarriage parts would come painted.. and to be honest i dont know why certain parts arent painted when the very next part beside it is..

That is normal on all the 08's to 10's. There is no need to go back to the dealer.

Yeah, I saw the same thing when I bought my '08. But this isn't unique to these trucks, I've noticed this on almost every car or truck I've bought.

For some reason they don't paint some components. I guess they figure they're not likely to develop a serious amount of rust during their lifespan. If it bothers you you may want to spray them down with something like Fluid Film. It's not permanent, but it'll stay on there a full year to prevent future rust.

If you've never tried Fluid Film and live in the U.S., just PM me your contact information and I'll get a sample can right out.

+1 on the fluid film, it will eventually turn that rust you hate into a black coating like what is on the frame, best part is all you have to do is spray it on and wait. Just don't spray your rotors while spraying behind the wheels! Don't forget the driveshaft while you're down there.
