What is the correct way to install the chrome around the windshield on 68 Ranger? I have new gasket and windshield but have yet to figure out how to get the chrome back on.
Thanks
The beast way is to install it before installing the windsheild but I'm guessing it's too late for that, So one of the other guys will have to help. It's won't be easy.
This is a two man job. Lay the glass on a work table face up. Place the gasket on the glass, then put the trim in the slot. Get a length of 3/16 sash cord, put it in the slot behind the glass starting at center bottom, all around and back.
With the cab clean place the assembly in place starting at the bottom, pull the cord getting the bottom seated, up each side and finally across the top.
The cord pulls the rubber out to aid in getting it in place correctly.
Thanks for the reply, we tried to install with the gasket around the glass, but it would not stay. Did not take much movement and it would pop back out. The side pieces were a bear, and they would pop out before we could install back in the truck. Figured there had to be an easier way, so quit before getting too aggravated.

John brings up a really good point. You gotta make sure you purchased the appropriate gasket/rubber that is made for the chrome trim. Dennis Carpenter makes the best product. I polished my chrome before removing the windshield but I paid for a professional to put a new piece of glass in, the rubbers, and the chrome molding. Pain in the rear if you are not familiar with the tricks of the trade.
I bought the gasket from Dennis Carpenter. I compared it with the original one and it seems to match exactly. I will try again tomorrow if I get home from work in time. Might also call down to Carpenters to see if they know any tricks. Probably simple once you figure it out.
Have thought about getting one of the glass places to install, but the last one that tried on another car I had, the guy wasn't even born when the car was made and had less of an idea than I did.
i paid $225 to have a carlite tinted and shaded windshield installed using my dennis carpenter gasket i had. they went out of there way to find one and get it. all shops could find was pgw formerly ppg made in china and is very thin crapola. i couldnt settle for that i had to get the carlite.
hehe lets hope they didnt just slap a carlite sticker on it.
it came out immaculate and they did not bend or dent the trim in any way. fyi the trim is not chrome. not sure if its stainless or aluminum, but it is definitely not chrome. it was very difficult finding a competent glass shop to do it. what i actually did was call around, and ask many questions, and the place that gave me the least amount of jersey attitude, and sounded like they somewhat know what theyre doing, is the place i went with. worked out great.
That is a tough job. Installed my last year and it took hours to figure it out. In the end, I used duct tape and butyl caulk in the grove for the glass to help hold things in one piece while installing. Wow those are tricky with the chrome.
The windshield last about a month till a rock got it and crack the glass.
I finally got the trim, gasket and windshield installed. No leaks, looks great. Secret is not to be in a hurry and expect it to fail, that way your surprised when it stays in. Actually, if you put the two side pieces in first, then the gasket around the windshield, then put the two top and two bottom pieces on being very careful and using tape to hold everything in place while working on it, it will stay. Be very careful and have a friend or two to help install the assembly in the truck.
No gasket available here in Baja, so I ordered one today from LMC...... should I order another from DC?? Next week will be the first attempt with the LMC gasket, if it arrives, that is.. Shipping to Mexico, and actually getting the item, is an adventure to be sure... I am taking copious notes, and saving posts to my "James Bondo" file...
