I believe they only last around 100k though (can't recall where I read that though) and as they wear out, the fan will slip less and run more.
Never heard of to 100k mile rule. Some of the guys wth 200k to 300k may be more help.I have 137k and mine still works fine
The style fan clutch we have normally never locks up when worn out
the only question I have has anyone really every measured the HP draw of the factory fan?
I have seen the 30HP number thrown out a few times and while I know the fan is huge that seams a little excessive to me.
I used to be a fire fighter and we used ventilation fans(smoke ejectors) that moved way more air (volume and velocity) and ran off 5hp honda motors.
just wondering
I agree with this. The 30hp figure is bogus.
I have done a lot of experimentation with fans, and unless you are going for a certain look, a street driven vehicle cools best with the factory clutch fan and a very efficient shroud.
Mine's got 250k and it's toast. I've got a new one from Ed sitting there ready to go in in the next couple weeks. It doesn't lock up. No hurricane for me when hot. It will stay engaged for a short while on startup though.
30hp is probably a bit on the high side for an improvement estimate. But, the fan on that truck is very aggressive (look at the pitch of the blades and the number blades). More food for thought...you get the hp improvements compared to when the clutch fan would be engaged. Which is usually when you want more hp -- working the engine hard pulling up a grade or trying to pass some one.
I may be mistaken but I think a member here tried an electric fan on his rig and went baclk to the factory setup. The electric fan could not keep up with the cooling for our trucks when it was most needed.

Yep, several people have tried them, not enough cooling for towing.
And my factory fan clutch is at 266,000 miles and still works great.
Okay...that's 3 guys. What about the other hundreds or thousands of people who have installed these fans? I completely believe that the three people you reference weren't happy with it. But maybe there was something unique about their circumstances? I'd like to hear from from folks who have installed this fan on their Super Duty.

There was something unique, they all liked to pull a big trailer around with their Superduty.
The one situation when an electric fan may be an improvement is rock crawling. Low vehicle speed, low average engine rpm with high ambient temperature and high loading.
Lol! What I meant was maybe they had stepped up the turbo and had a Diablo tuner set on kill. In which case, I wouldn't be surprised.
I appreciate everyone's input. I really would like to hear from people who have actually installed the fan on their Super Duty. Both some people how like it and some who don't.
