55 Headlight Switch Removal Problem
Well as luck would have it, I looked all over the switch looking for the release button to release the shaft and darn if I can't find it! I saw what may appear to be a release around the rheostat and pushed on it with my screwdriver but no dice. Am I overlooking something? Appreciate any help!

Likely missing the release button. LOL
Just reach your hand up there behind the switch and feel all the way around it, the button is fairly large ~ 3/8" in diam, sticks out about 1/2" and has a spring wrapped around it. You shouldn't need any type tool other than your finger to press it in.

On your 55, Power is routed through that headlight switch.
If you are going to try to remove it, be SURE to disconnect your battery ground cable first, or you may do some unintended arc welding behind the dash.
Also, there's alittle trick to getting the stem out. First, push the **** all the way in, then press the button. Push the release button, and slowly TWIST while youbull the stem out. If you twist a little it should come right out.

I thought I would revive this thread to help anyone as dumb as me. I had a devil of a time finding the know release button. Of course looking at that picture of the 1961 version and the 1949 version, I was looking at the bottom. With all the wires and dirt, it was easy to miss on the top. I even removed my instrument cluster and got a mirror out, until I read Steves55 note a little closer. It's right in the middle of all the wires.
You can actually see it in the manual but it's not pointed out and the picture is a little dark.
So, here is a good picture.
Here is a picture of it in its home. The cable going across the top is the wiper cable.
Now to clean it all up and ponder wiring it. I have some questions there, but will start a new thread for that.

Thank you!! You saved me from breaking the whole assembly! lol
But I did find out the hard way that the shaft has to be pushed all the way in to be able to release it with the button.
