Can't have any active Error codes, no Vac leaks, Compression does not have to be great, just relatively balanced. Stick w/ 87 octane. 13.5 BTDC is mentioned & easily attainable, but 16 BTDC is the sweet spot.
Combustion Chamber deposits are a big reason you may Ping before reaching 16 BTDC.

Don't use Platinum plugs/ Use Stock Nic plated Copper Cores/ Mototcraft or Aulolites. Increase gap till miss, then reduce gap .002.
Then increase Base timing 2 degrees at a time until Ping is reached under load. then reduce advance 2 degrees. Spout plug out for timing check & adjustment, then replace. On an otherwise stock engine, more than 16 BTDC is not worth it.
This is an Ignition upgrade w/ gap stretch & Base Timing bump that will pay for itself with a Performance & MPG increase very quickly. Enjoy!
