newbie exhaust question

I have a 91 F250 4X4 with the 5.8L and 5 spd manual.

I have been looking at headers, y-pipes and converters. I am confused by what is the difference between a heavy duty part versus a non HD part.

What are they talking about exactly? Is there actually a difference between a HD 250 and a regular 250? I figured the parts would be the same.

The HD 250 has a different exhaust than the regular 250. Twin separate pipes into a giant converter, to a muffler, and twin tailpipes. The regular 250 has a y pipe to a smaller converter and a single tailpipe.

Can the HD exhaust be converted to a regular 250 using the y-pipe? I noticed that there is a huge price difference in the converters. Both the converter and the muffler on mine are shot.

You should be able to do that without a problem, as long as your replacement cat matches the GVW of the truck. I got my 3" cat with air pipe from Bear River Converters - Wholesale distributors of catalytic converters. Very good quality, and not expensive at all.

Because yours is the HD version, I'm guessing it's an 8800 GVW. If your state is stringent on emissions stuff, you'll want to get a converter that's rated for that GVW or higher.
