Hi there! I just bought a 2001 Ford F350 7.3 liter diesel engine crew cab (long bed?). We got it to pull around a 5th wheel we will be living in part-time. I know nothing about diesel vehicles, and barely know a thing about vehicles in general, except I love driving a big truck. My husband, not so much.
The truck drives great, but it's very loud and it has a noise that reminds me of rockers or pistons hitting metal or something. Is that normal for a diesel truck? It also sometimes smells really badly in the cab like chemicals. One day, I opened the cab and it smelled like someone had spilled nail polish remover. Hmmn...
Is there anything we can do to the truck to make pulling around a 5th wheel easier or more enjoyable? We have had the truck for less than a week, and we haven't purchased our 5th wheel yet.
First off welcome to FTE! however this is the 94-97 forum just an fyi. If you go back out to the main page of FTE, you will see a Super duty forum that includes your year truck.
To answer your questions, Diesels are loud and smelly. That is normal. Thats why we love them!
Tia, when you buy a diesel, its definately not for the quiet minded type. With the amount of torque and power a person gets from a diesel, the noise and smell comes with it. Not to mention, fuel economy when pulling loads is better then a gas engine.
First off WELCOME to FTE. This is one of the nicest places on the web for powerstrokes. Some of the other sites are more rude etc. Stick around you will be surprised what you learn.
Yes they are a bit noisy but the smells you are describing are not typical.
I would maybe clean the carpet to get that interior smell out. Might pull the seats to get it real good.
As far as the noises, as long as it runs good and it sounds like other trucks it is fine. Yes diesels do make a bit more noise than a gasser but they should not be obnoxious sounding. Next time you are in any parking lot pay attention to other ford trucks around you, listen to how they sound yours probably is the same. If it is alot different then let us know for sure.
However you are more than welcome to hang out here with us as well. There is not alot of difference in your truck and ours as far as the motor is concerned.
nothing says thats a tough truck like seeing it in a espresso parking lot. lol
Haha, hey now, my buddys sister owns an espresso stand and they sure know how to hire the cute girls.

No, the OP had questions about how loud these things were, We are just pointing out that sometimes when in a drive thru situation, you might find it easier to shut off the engine so you may place an order.
