Might be loooking at a used SCT X3. Are there any concerns I should be aware of with a used one vs a new one that has never been on a truck before. It was on a 03 F350 and would be going on my 06 F350. Thanks.
If you know the seller and you know it isn't locked then there should be no concerns. If you're buying somewhere like Ebay then that's another story. Also....ask how many unlocks it has left. That would make up a HUGE part in my decision.
Personnally i dont buy used electronics, who knows what the previous owner did or what problems it could have, and like stated how many unlocks it has left.
SCT's have custom tunes, theres a good chance that you'll have to get it re-tuned
Thanks Guys. What do you mean by unlocks, I havent heard that term before?
You have pairing between a vehicle and the tuner. Pairing is like "locking" the tuner to a particular VIN of a certain vehicle. When you return the vehicle to stock, you are unpairing the tuner to the vehicle and thus, "unlocking" the tuner to the vehicle. Usually you have 5 unlocks before you have to send it back to SCT to have them unlock it for I think $100, but I'm not sure.
It's a cheezy way of continuing to get money out of customers. I don't agree with it, but I can see the argument for it.
Thanks Tex. There is a dealer here in town that sell's them for $395. Maybe I will just buy it new and then I'll know what I have, then I can get someone to write and send me a custom tune for it.

I think that would be the better way. I'm with lakewood on this, I don't buy electronics second hand(or I try not too for much of anything really, same reasons apply for all of them). Not saying you are totally without risk on a new one, your just hoping that the odds are very much against it if you buy new.
I went to my dealer today and he has both the X3 and the SF3. Can I put a custom tune on the SF3? I looked on the web site and it only says that it has three preloaded tunes but nothing about custom tuning. It does however say custom tuning on the packaging. THanks again folks.

This was brought up in another thread and I believe that it was determined that the SF3 is indeed able to hold custom tunes as well. I've only dealt with the xCal 2(no longer made) and the X3.
Just an FYI: if you want to save a few bucks and go with a Ford Xcal2 I can unlock and/or restore it. So it would be back to the default 5 changes. I charge $35 which includes return shipping. I've done this for many people.
I am currently going through this. I bought a used SF3 off of ebay for $175. When I got it, it was still married to a 2008 Mustang GT.
I sent the seller a disgruntled e-mail. he tried saying that it could be unlocked by reloading the software, but I tried and was unsuccessful. I called SCT told them it was locked and still had 5 unlocks left and asked them what I could do to unlock it and they told me I would have to mail it to them and pay a $150 unlocking fee. So I sent it to them to unlock it. For a total of $325 plus shipping costs. I may have saved a few bucks but I keep thinking I could be playing with my new toy by now if I would have just got a new one.
