It finally happened

233800 KM and it started coughing white smoke yesterday morning. The beast is over at the dealer now. Diagnosis EGR cooler, oil cooler, water pump and front cover.

Apparently the Ford warranty rep is coming to view it at the dealership. Repair costs apparently exceed what they consider normal.

all the problems seem to go hand in hand, you'd think ford wouldn't think twice about doing the repairs. hopefully you get your truck back soon

had a local mechanic say that was probably the problem with mine although I only have 80K miles. I'm starting to hear my clutch fan come on more and more when towing. Also smell some coolant every now and then. Did you have that going on?

You must have a serious warranty to still be covered with 233800KM!

Backspace,

You have the classic symptoms of egr cooler/oil cooler syndrome. You need to get the egr cooler replaced or deleted and the oil cooler replaced asap, like now. Driving it increases the chance of oil cooler rupture and a mess you never want to see, let alone clean up. BTDT. Install a coolant filter before you drive with your new coolers.

Regards

I've got the Ford Diesel Enginecare Plus. Here in Canada it's good for 7 years or 300,000 KM. After this, it will have been well worth the $2500 or so that I paid. Wish I could have gotten it on the tranny as well. I know the symptoms, that why it's at the dealer. I already have my coolant filter built, but not installed yet. I talked to the mechanic here and they said that it would void my warranty. So until 300,000 I won't be putting it in or changing anything from stock. As stated they are replacing the oil cooler, egr cooler, front cover and water pump. After that they will do more tests to check the head gaskets.

I also discussed the latest flash with the mechanic and he doesn't buy any of the talk regarding setting a code when the temp difference between oil and coolant is 15 degrees. Mine got the flash last December and never set a code. I was driving down the freeway, when I had to slow down my fan came on. The next day when I was already planning on taking it to the dealer, I could see white smoke and smell coolant. He has yet to see one with the new flash that has. Maybe Cheezit can shed some light on that?

I hadn't really towed a lot over the last few months, but my fan had come on a few times since I got the latest flash - with relatively light loads. Figured it was part of the new programming.

What gets me is that one can do everything according to the book, synthetic fluids, filters, flushes and all that and still have this dreaded issue.

mohle,

I would talk to the service manager at your dealership regarding the coolant filter and your warranty status. if you wait until your warranty mileages out, you will be putting 66,200 km or over 40000 miles on your new oil cooler. It will also act as your coolant filter for that distance. I would not want to take the chance that this will happen again at 301000 km.

Regards

No worries there. By then I won't have the truck anymore or I'll take it in for the developing rear main seal which should also be under warranty. I would have them do a good once over. The mechanic working on mine was once an employee of mine and we still keep in touch. I'm sure that he will be doing a very good job on it. The way I'm racking up the KM, I'll hit 300,000 by this fall.

I just had my oil cooler rebuilt and flushed the cooling system. I installed a coolant filter at that time. I drove 200Miles and the first filter is clogged already! LOL

How much crap can be in there? hopefully my oil cooler is not clogged again!

Exactly the reason why I would not drive 10 feet with a new oil cooler without a coolant filter.

It would be best to install the coolant filter 1000 miles before you rebuild the oil cooler.... It's not always possible though.

ehgee...

I agree with you 100% on that one. I will be able to know ahead of time now if my cooler is clogging. My oil cooler failed catastrophically so no chance to filter early.
