Much Better

Right before lunch I went to an exhaust shop to see about what could be done with that wimpy sounding exhaust. It is amazing what can be done to give it a nice "aggressive" sound.

So far, I've really enjoyed this little truck. I'm used to more power then what this thing has, but I didn't get it with a mind to tow anything(all my trailers are gooseneck anyway), some hauling. So power isn't much of a fact.

About the only thing I didn't truly like was the exhaust that sounded worse then my mom's sewing machine when I would get on the throttle. Now it sounds so much better.

Not really as much as I would have thought that would have to be done in order to get a better sound.

We just put on a new muffler(flowmaster), he had his own pipes that he shaped to create the rest of the exhaust and we added 4"tips to it. The duals I have angled out behind each rear wheel(never was fond of the straight back duals).

Other then that not much else. The sound isn't like what I have on the 6.0, but it is very much an improvement and I'm suprised about how much, considering what I think of as so little, was done to it.

Doh! I really like the stock sound, but to each his own... Though I have to protest... Flowmaster is too much of a Chevy thing.... All sound and no go. I am partial to Magnaflow and Dynomax (except the cheap super-turbos).
If I were just trying to go loud and obnoxious, I'd just leave straigh pipes or cherry bombs. Cheaper and you don't lose as many cool points in my book.

I couldn't stand it. Of course, I'm also used to a straight piped 6.0 that is far from stock performance wise, so it's hard to go to stock after that.

That is true, but I do like how they sound.

Magnaflow I'm not too partial on, but that's just me. I don't have much experience with Dynomax.

Not viable here on various levels and I wasn't wanting all out obnoxious. Just something a little "meaner" or "stouter" then stock.

I had dual exhaust with stainless tips and a magnaflow muffler on my 2006 Chevy 1500. I loved it around town but on the highway around 70-75 it would annoy the **** out of me! I think the dual exhaust plus the K&N Cold Air Intake made it to loud for my liking. It almost seems the cold air intake was a step too far for loudness.

I'm scared to put dual exhaust on my new 2010 XLT because I don't want that annoying loudness on the highway when driving to see friends and family. It would drive me nuts when trying to have a conversation.

That's a good point. I haven't had it on the interstate yet, but so far it only seems to be aggressive down low, when I'm up to about 45-50 I don't really hear anything.

I'll have to try to make it a point to get on the interstate for a bit to try it out.

Yea Tex... 45-65 was perfect. Once I hit 70-75, it was annoying loud. But that was with the magnaflow and the intake kit. The intake made it loud before I had the dual exhaust put on.

Magna Flow exhaust isn't all that loud in my opinion. It's much quieter than the 2 chamber Flowmasters. CAI is another story. Those are loud and don't really do much good. They do let more dirt into the intake tract, though.

I'm not fond of intakes period. However, I think with a normal occurance with the 5.4 in the superduties is that the engine tends to run lean when a person doesn't account for the a/m intake on the truck with custom tuning. I heard that even regular tuning there are still lean issues when people have the a/m intakes. I don't know if that translates to the 150s, I just know it's been an occurance on the 5.4s in the superduties.

The loudness I speak of I guess was more of a low pitch constant moan and vibration. The magnaflow had a low tone while the flowmaster was more snappy.

I'm going to have to get on the interstate tomorrow when I go get something to eat I guess. I'm a little nervous now. The truck is my travel truck when I'm not hauling the horses to a horse show.

Though I'm not a fan of Slowmaster, I think you'd be ok as the F-150 (especially these new ones) are much more solidly built and insulated than the Chevy. Also, if you have the muffler installed as far back as possible and keep the counterweight off the stock system, it'll help keep some of the resonating to a minimum inside the cab...
This is why I am such a strong advocate of Dynomax race magnums (now called Ultraflows). They have a low tone below about 2,500 RPMs but really growl in higher up in the RPMs. They also don't have baffling.

That's why there are different exhaust manufacturers. That way everyone's taste is covered. Air intakes do lean out the gas engines with OBD-II. The engine management system is so sensitive that it can detect more air, but it is not capable of correcting the A/F ratio without reprogramming. The EEC-IV systems didn't have that problem. It seems they would compensate for increased air flow in the intake better.

Well, I have no complaints about the sound at highway speeds. It's just a little rumble between 70-80. I think the intake played a huge part in the loudness of the exhaust at highway speeds for you hawks.

I do notice the change of the sound when the T/H mode is engaged now. I barely noticed anything with the T/H compared to the 6.0 T/H mode, so I was starting to wonder if it was different from what the SDs get, but I notice more now by the change in the exhaust sound.

So far, I'm still happy with everything. Although I was a little worried there for a second.
