Door Panel Refurbish

Okay, I am not ready to buy new door panels yet (when I do it is going to include a set up at least for power door locks and such, maybe more and will be a little bit of a project then doing the conversion) but mine are faded and sun damaged. One thing I noticed though is that where I rest my arm, it looks good and is not faded or chalked up. This got me to wondering, is it possible to refurbish these or maybe buy a little more time with some light oil on the panels, for them to soak it up? Is this more of a mess than anything else?

Has anyone thought of this or tried it? Are there any drawbacks?

Thank you,

Nick

There was a lady on here who posted pics after she sanded and repainted her doors. I think they turned out pretty nice. You may want to find that thread to give you some ideas.

Thank you, I had seen that, and I think they look good! I was only wondering if this was another option. I was just thinking this might be a low budget and low effort idea since I was looking at possibly replacing them down the road.

I had read about someone using a light layer of vaseline.

I went outside and tested a small spot. I put a little motor oil on it, and the panel seemed to suck it right up. Still a little chalky, but I am wondering if with time, that will stop too. It did get darker. I am going to try a bigger spot in a little while.

Recently I did mine. I sanded down to the plastic to get rid of the sun-acne on the horizontal top of the panel. Mine were just like yours. I used a red-color 3M pad to go over the rest of the panel to get rid of the deterioration. I then washed/cleaned it a number of times to make positive sure there was only plastic to deal with. Used the SEM prep spray and SEM color paint in 3 layers. Came out great. It's a job, but if you take your time and use the SEM products, you will be satisfied with the results. I bought an old dash pad to do next along with redoing the pillar covers, kick panels etc. While the panels were off I remade the vapor/weather shields too.
