My buddies has a 1997 ford f150 and he put dual straights on it but he left the cats on and its not near as loud as he wants it to be. So what my question is can you take the cats off of that year pickup and put your sensors back in? Or is there another way to do the exaust that it can be loud and still leave the cats on?
From a legal standpoint, no. From a practical standpoint, maybe. Modern Ford are intended to be quiet, Ford put a lot of engineering into that point. The truck is made from what Ford calls quiet steel, they use a very good yet cost effective insulation, etc.
If the rear converters are not monitored, you could take them out without any lights coming on. But the legal alternative is to replace them with actual high flow cats. By high flow I don't mean some $60 Magnaflow. Those are just ordinary cats with a Fancy brand name. I mean a $200 high performance converter.
If it were me, I would leave it alone. Heres basically what I see. John Doe want a loud system. He puts on a high performance muffler. Its still no loud enough. So he chops it off and switches to glasspacks. Still not loud enough. So a friend tell him if he removes the cats it will get louder. John does so, and the results are what he wanted. 6 months later it starts to get annoying. The truck has more bark than bite, and it is loud all the time. At this point he wants the sound he had when the cats were still there.
I have been through that cycle myself, and have had countless customers tell me the same story.
I put my exhaust on my truck and it is very loud. These trucks have 2 cats and 2 preheaters. i took off the cats and left the preheaters. the sensors are in the preheaters, so the check engine light does not come on.
Ive got no cats or preheats, headers with dual flowmaster 40's. I love it and so does everyone whos heard it.
Yes I do have a CL on, but no problems. Been like it for 4 years now.
I'm too OCD to deal with a perpetual CEL. That would make me crazy. You'd never know when some other trouble is sneaking in behind that light unless you pull your codes every week.....
