I did the GPR LED mod about two nights ago. It's way cool. In fact I've stopped using my remote start as much just to see it working. Here's my question:
I drove the truck today about 15 miles so it was good and warm. Parked and shut it off for about 2 hours. Got back in and looked at the LED for the GPR, nothing. I cycled the key still no light. I checked the fuse, it's good. Is it possible that GPR doesn't come on when the engine is warm? Or am I another FTE user that has diagnosed a bad GPR just from doing this simple mod? I'm confident that I my connections for the LED are good. I used heat shrink connectors and mounted the ground wire solid. I replaced the GPR about 1 1/2 years ago with a auto parts store one. Thanks for the help.
The glow plug system is electronically controlled by the PCM. If the temperature is below 131°F the PCM will energize the glow plugs immediately after the key is placed in the ON position. Then, depending on the readings from the engine oil temperature sensor and the barometric pressure sensor, the PCM determines how long the glow plugs will be on.
The glow plugs are self-regulating. If the engine oil temperature is above 55°C (131°F), the PCM will bulb-check the WAIT TO START lamp but not energize the glow plug relay or control module.
The PCM protects the glow plugs by energizing them for short durations if the battery voltage is abnormally high.
The glow plug ON time varies from 0-120 seconds depending on battery voltage, engine oil temperature and barometric pressure.
