The bracket you are referring to in the middle of the ceiling is for supporting the headliner. The original dome light for the '51-'52 trucks was an option or came with the 5-Star Extra trim package and mounted in the center just above the rear window. You'll see a screw hole in the top of the rear window frame where it attached. Here's a pic:
You can see the bracket extension where it screws to the window frame. That light is actually for sale here:
As you can see, the original lights are pricey when you find them. Nothing says that you can't use a different kind of light, though. A parts cab that I recently picket up had a clear external clearance light mounted for a dome light.
Yep almost impossible to find (this is only the second one I've seen in 5 years) and very expensive as you can see!
Here's mine mounted above the rear window. I replaced the metal toggle with a lighted one so I could turn it on in the dark while driving if necessary.
I have a different small light under the dash that shines dimmly toward the floor on the door switches. You can just make it out on the bottom lip of the dash in this pic in front of the defrost hose (and the door switch to the right too). It's nice because it illuminates the cab enough, doesn't blind you if you are getting in on a dark night.
That one on ebay is quite expenscive at 124 dollars but I guess it is orignal equipment so the price will be high. I sure would like to have one but at that price? Thanks for the pics Julies on yours and the lighted switch is a good idea.
Well, it's only up to $43 at this point but I'll bet in the last day or two it will go up to about $100 at least. There's alot of people bidding on this. You may not find another one for a few years! So if you are stock ****, I might jump in at $43!
Great Ideas Folk's on the "Non-Stock" alternatives ,. I'm also looking for something different,..and have a couple of lamps stashed for just this purpose..guess it's time to dig them out lol!
I like the idea of an under dash floor light. Not sure if my 50 is suppose to have a dome light or not. The PO put a chrome plate in the center of the headliner to hold it up. It has door switches but they are not hooked to anything.
I purchased a replacement bulb for the light from LMC and its impossible to put the bulb in without breaking the bulb. Funny stuff.. Anyone have any ideas?
LMC is not always correct with parts. Just find a shorter bulb that will fit. There are plenty of them out there, either 6V or 12V, depending on your set up.
