....eventually I just know my '86 69. diesel is gonna have to be replaced. I've heard it could cost 4-5 K total to get a rebuilt (installed). Does this sound right, and does anyone have any tips for where to find a rebuilt? thanks, John

If you take care of that engine, the truck will fall apart around it. 200k-300k and up is not unusual for that engine, and still be in good shape.
...it smokes badly, leaks a lot of oil and glow plugs won't work because of carbon buildup in top end.... that said, I'll probably keep running it quite a while longer! thanks,

Smoking during start up is normal for a diesel. Smoking while running is probably a bad injector if the engine doesn't use a lot of oil.
Glowplugs usually don't work because people buy cheap ones that burn out. Motorcraft/Beru are the only ones to use.

Ooooo, Thats funny!
A little education would go a long ways!
Smokes badly, Probably because it's crying for a tune up, What color is the smoke??
Leaks a lot of oil, Probably because the rocker covers are falling off or the oil sending unit is leaking, maybe the IP gear cover.
Carbon build up preventing the GP's from working, makes me laugh!
