77' F150 4x4

I am looking to buy a 77' F150 4x4 with a 351. It has some body rust but I'm not worried about that so much, im going to rebuild the motor but my question is, is the guy wants 1000 dollars for it and i was wondering if it was worth it but i am also going to try and give him eight. If there is anything that you need to know more on it just let me know. Thanks Nick

There's just far too many variables to give you an honest response online without more detailed info and PICS, but generally speaking $800-$1,000 for a working 4x4 with minimal rust seems pretty fair.

Alright thank you a lot. Do you by any chance have the length of the truck or know where to find it.

If you're wondering if it will fit on your trailer, maybe this will help....

That's a long bed on a 20' trailer. Plenty of room to spare. Keep in mind, only the wheelbase is important, NOT the overall length. When properly loaded, the truck will overhang the rear of the trailer by several feet.......as you can see.

A full size long bed will even fit on a slightly smaller trailer:

How long is your trailer, 75F350?? I would say you could easily fit one on a 16 foot.

I have a 16' that I haul my short box on. You could get a long bed on it but it would be "full". -Ed

Thought I put that on there. Mine is an 8 x 16 only. Full size long bed fits fine. Notice room to spare up front and in the rear.
Vehicle does overhang but not to the point where the law gets upset.

Dam guys i realy didn't expect all the help so quick, I also have a Honda and i go on their forums and i don't get nearly this much help in this time. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what to look for because yes i am going to buy it but if there is something that could be wrong with the frame and drivetrain that makes the truck non worth my time and money just let me know. I am going to rebuild the motor so that's no issue and the looks isn't that important right now as well.

Thanks Nick

that's cause the honda guys are normally young stuck up metrosexuals that are too cool for everybody. the drivetrains on these truck are pretty sound for the most part, and i haven't heard of many frame problems from this era. by this time next week i'll be back in a 78 f150 so i'm happy.nothing beats the simplicity of an old truck like these. i know nowadays a lot of guys my age are into tuners and such, but computers take the fun out of working on a vehicle. my cavalier had a vacuum leak a few months ago. i couldn't find it because the second it would start it would rev to 3500rpm because that's how the computer could keep it running. yeah you can plug a code reader in and get a general idea of what's wrong, but i guess i just like old school wrenching

Take a good look at the frame where the steering box mounts to it. There know for cracking or breaking there due to the extra stress put on them from people installing larger tires. If it is cracked or broken it's fixable but maybe you could negotiate the selling price a bit. Other than that I really can't think of much with the frame or drivetrain. Sure some other members will chime in if they know of any. Good Luck and keep us imformed of your new purchase. -Ed

full time 4x4 or part time?

here's what I expect to have to replace on these trucks when I buy one.

rear axle seals (outer, look for oil on the insides of the tires)

U-joints

front drive shaft

outer axle u-joints on front axle

ball joints

track arm bushings

77 has a steering joint on the pitman arm itself... expect it to have some wear

tie rod ends & the rest of the steering linkage joints

power steering hoses

radiator

complete brake job with lines, at least the rubber lines

exhaust

heater fan (motor)

carb kit

ignition tuneup (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, vac advance)

inspect/repack/or replace front wheel bearings.

Spindle seals & inner bearings (the tiny needle bearings that the axle ends ride in)

as far as sheetmetal, cab floor pans, cab corners, possibly lower door skins, lower front fender patches, bed sides, and sometimes outer wheel houses that attach wheel well to bedside.

Then you've got your cab weatherstripping, carpet or rubber floor mat... paint/body work

your nickle & dime items like alternator, voltage regulator, belts, thermostat, fuel pump...

god I'll just stop.. I'm reliving a couple of restorations and I'm depressing myself.

Here's the one thing about these ford trucks though, you can drive em with pretty much all or any of these things wrong with them and pick away at them one item at a time

because they are so damn tough!

good luck, post pictures.

First off i don't know what a full time 4x4 is, are you meaning like just a mud truck or driving it daily with 4x4 engaged. I plan on using this truck like a man ought to use his "Built Ford Tough" truck but in the same breath take care of her.OK well i bought the damn thing. I felt the brakes and they felt nice and firm, went through the gears and they didn't have a problem going into drive reverse low and so on, i felt the 4x4 gears and i'm not sure how they work because honestly this is my first truck period but they felt like my manual car nice and stiff. I don't have any pics as of right now but i will get some this weekend when i put it storage due to the ****ed up city i live that doesn't allow non-running vehicles on your property.
