Pizza! Never packed wheel bearings with pizza afore. Dang new stuff is popin up all the time.
You'll need something to clean the hub assy's with. Proprer way is to have a parts cleaner tank with a brush. I have used an old 3 lb margarine container with solvent or gasoline (I know this is a no no) before. Make sure Troy has new races with the bearings. If they came without, I might have some down stairs. Ya need a good hammer and punch to drive the old races out. I'll see if I kin borrow Clints race drivers and slide hammer in case the spindle is chewed up beyond use. I would think that you should plan on that real possibility if Troy try's to drive it down. It really can mess with the brakes when they go. I've had to chisel the big nuts off before. Not much fun if you don't take care of it in time.
Well it look like there will be a wheel bearing changin - Axle unloading - axle swapping - wrenchen party at my house Sunday @ around 13:00.
All are welcome-- Free Pizza!
Dude, I thought this was still tentative! And hows come you never mentioned pizza before??
But seriously, I'm wondering if I should be driving it that far. (Google Maps says it around 90 miles.) The front passenger side wheel is pretty loose. Driver side doesn't move at all. Any rules of thumb on how much movement is too much? Other than when it falls off it was too much.
Thing is if the bearing is bad it will grab the inner race and spin it on the spindle. Spindles are are the expensive and difficult part. New spindles and bearings are really tight and difficult to get together. Worn spindles I put together really dry. May be too late now but won't know till ya get them apart. I can drive up before sunday if you want. Do you have jack stands and a jack?
That's one heck of an offer Jack! I really appreciate that. Unfortunately, I'm busy with my job and/or kids the next few evenings. I think soccer is over with on May 1st. Maybe we can get something worked out after you get back the next week/weekend.
So what's the plan for your axle swap, Chad? Still aiming for this weekend?
Looks like this is a wash. Chad was able to get the spider gears out of the back of free bee and I went up today and helped them get the trailer peices loaded up and off to the welder. Troy really shouldn't drive on the bad bearing so we are going up to Troy's tomorrow afternoon. Chad says he is having trouble getting on FTE. So I posted for hime. Didn't see Curtman post either. Chad thinks it my be an update done on his work puter. Could be why Curtman isn't posting either.
yep I am on call, I just got home from working on the atm at the casino, and before that I had just gotten home (for about 5 minutes) from running calls in both Odgen, then Lawrence.
Wish I knew what calls were going to be like, I would wander over to help with the wheel bearings over to Elsworth. I really wanna!
Well I owe Jack and Chad a really big thank you for spending their Sunday coming up to Ellsworth to teach me how to change the front wheel bearings on my Explorer. I didn't set any speed records, but sure learned a lot. They not only provided expert instruction, they also brought all kinds of tools that I now know the value of. My want list grew substantially today.
One thing worth reporting is that the inside bearing on the passenger side fell out in pieces when we pulled the hub. Is definitely a good thing they made a house call rather than me loading my kids in the truck and heading to Newton for this project. More than likely would not have made it.
We did find a couple things that need attention before I hit the road again. So I'm not quite ready to roll yet. But I should be able to handle them on my own.
Actually went really well Jr. got a test drive and Troys bearings are 99% fixed. So that is pretty cool. It was hard not to jump in and do one side while Troy and Jack did the other-- but now Troy has a good idea of how it needs to be done ;-)
I got the spider gears out of Freebie myself Friday night. and I think the 4:11 gears are OK for Thomas :-) and it now rolls!!! It was kind of a long task but it's done. No axle swap needed.
