360 or 390

I have a 1976 f100/150 Ranger. I was told it had a 360 but the valve cover actually still has a sticker on it that has engine info for both 360 and 390 and it says engine displacement is 390. Well why question is is there a way to tell the difference from a 360 to 390. If I understand correctly it is the same block with a different crank and rods. any way to tell?

Only way is to pull a plug and measure the stroke, if its around 3.5 your have a 360, if its around 3.75 you have a 390.

It is the same block except for the rotating assembly. You can measure the stroke by using a wood dowl in a spark-plug hole. A 360 will measure 3.500'' and a 390 will measuse 3.784''. Hope this helps.

Pull a spark plug and bring #1 to TDC. Use a wooden dowel or something that won't scratch the cylinder walls and insert it into the spark plug hole. Make a mark at the threads.

Take #1 to BDC and make another mark.

360 = 3.50 inches
390 = 3.78 or 3 3/4 would suffice on a ruler.
