I live on a farm in Alberta with a number of old vehicles laying around and am interested in starting a restoration project with one of them, but the problem is choosing what to restore. There is an old galaxie with a 428 that im guessing only needs minor work and I wish to use it for whatever vehicle I restore. At first I had my heart set on starting to restore the 58 Edsel but started to think that it might not be worth all the trouble and am starting to wonder if I would be better off fixing up one of the old pickups around here (years are about 1970 and onward). Any advice?
I'm in Calgary. I restored a 69 F100 4WD. Put a 410 in it (close cousin to a 428). Have a few friends into old Fords, but we are few and far between.
Indeed, what year is the Galaxy, what trucks do you have, what kind of condition are they in, and have you done before (what kind of project are you up for).
If you are not too far out of Calgary I know folks with parts to swap.
Im just 20 years old and have never done a project before but i figured should try one. I plan on it being a very slow process but need to start at some point.
the galaxie is a third generation galaxie 500 so 1965-1968. it was in a front end collision but was driven about 100km afterwards with a busted rad and parked in the field, so im not sure what shape the engine is in, probably needs some boring then would run fine i believe.
Im actually at university right now (one reason why the project will be extra slow and long), but i will be home next week and ill get some pictures of some of the possible canidates. They all have no body damage apart from rust and im guessing the most expensive part to restore any of them would be the interior
I am starting to think attempting to restore the edsel would be a bad idea since i have no experience and i would take alot to bring it back to good looks. It would be very easy however to put the 428 or somethin else laying around or i find into an old truck to make an off roader
If the Galaxie is a 2 door, and fixable, that would be interesting. A Gal 500 LTD might be a 4 door though, iirc, that was a fancied up Galaxie, not the "sported up" version, which was the XL. Check for anything that says "7 Litre", that is a desireable model.
As for "restoration", that is much more expensive that simply making it usable. As far as which to pick, the most rust free, most complete, least damage, etc--you gotta pick something that is doable first, then decide if that particular unit is something you want to work on and live with.
