Alternator Draining Battery

I think I need to get my meter calibrated. Silly thing reads .2-.4 with the leads not touching anything. But when I touched the leads to the battery posts it did not jump up any.

What type of meter do you have?
If you have a clamp type, it is normal... you are suppose to hit reset before you use it to calibrate it.
If you are using a "pass through" lead type ammeter (eg on a VOM), it is suppose to read zero.
I assume these are both digital meters.. not analog.

That kind of a meter may not be very accurate at measuring low amperage.
1.5% claimed error on a 600amp range... you are within the error bar.
You can try to use the test leads -- or.. I keep another VOM around for that.
Use a VOM instead. They are $20.
Remarkably, usually more accurate at measuring 50 to 300 milliamp.

Yes, but I was trying to do the poor man's method he described later with checking for AC voltage.
