86 F150 trans
86 F150 302 fuel injected 4 speed manual 4x4. What kind of tranny is it. And if I need to rebuild should I rebuild that or put a 5 speed in. If so just a swap straight up or more involved. I have no problem keeping 4 speed

Most likely you have a Borg Warner T18 or T19 4 speed. If you go to 5 speed you will likely have to find a matching transfer case as well and change drive shaft lengths and maybe more. My 86 F250 4x4 has a BW T19. The difference from the T18 is that the T19 has a synchronizer for 1st. T18 does not. That is not a big deal as you rarely used the compound low ratio 1st gear to pull away from a stop anyway.
