Well, I filled it up last night, and this morning after driving to work it started dripping.
Because it's dripping from the inspection plate, and it's not pouring out, can I guess it's a crack in the front gasket near the top?
I don't know specifics about the ZF 5 speed, but the only way a tranny would be burning fluid is if it's getting really hot. If most of your driving is off road then it's possible you're putting too much stress on it. At the same time you should smell it if it's burning.
Being that low I'd say you definitely have a leak. The best I could suggest to locate it is to drive the truck around and get it up to temp, then crawl under the truck to look with the engine running.
Why do you care for the trans temperature? It ain't no slushbox with clutches and stuff to burn up, it's all gears inside, heat won't be anywhere near as harmful to your trans that it is to say an E4OD. Also, you don't even have a torque converter, and that's where most heat is generated in an auto transmission...
I'm planning some serious rebuilding and upgrading this summer, and I want to keep an eye on everything.
The truck sat, without running, for over a year in Alaska while I was away.
I'm assuming (and I know how much trouble that word can get me in) that the gasket dried out, then cracked when I fired it up (right away!) and drove it away.
