I'm looking at buying a coworker's 97 Expedition XLT with the 5.4 v8. It has all leather, third seat, rear air, running boards, tow package, cd changer, etc..
It's a beautiful vehicle and I know it has been taken care of as the owner is very meticulous about maintenance, recalls, etc..
My only real concern is that it has 87,000 miles and no warranty.
The low book is about $15,000 and the high is about $21000 with an asking price of $18000. I wouldn't flinch at the price if not for the miles.
Should this be a big concern? This vehicle will be a second vehicle as I have a 2001 supercrew that we love. (Bought it last year because I couldn't afford a new Expedition)
You might want to look around a little... I just bought a 97XLT
w/leather, rear air, no third seat, and only 24,000 miles... for 19,100 out the door.... I got it from a ford dealer in Delaware... At first I thought the miles seemed fishy. Turns out it was impounded from customs and the dealer had just bought the day before...
Well anyhow, its been 2 months and 3000 miles later and its running great... I love...
I've checked our local dealer, but haven't found anything in that good of shape, even with the miles. I'm in California, and the prices I've seen for this year & equipment have been around $19500 and up to $23 or $24k.
I'm really wondering what kind of problems to expect after this kind of mileage. Thanks for the reply!
I just bought a 97 xlt 4X4 in december. It is loaded except for leather and it has 82000. Love the truck and only paid 12,900. Look on ebay. There is quite a few good deals if ou know what to look for. I could not find one at a dealership for under 17k. I found the exact same truck in the autotrader but the owner would take nothing less than 15,700. Good luck in your search.
California prices may be alot higher than here in Missouri, but sounds a little high for that a 97. I just bought a 99 EB with 49,000 miles for $19,500. Since I went through the dealer I was able to purchase an extended warranty. Make sure that when you are looking at blue book costs that you are looking at individual resale value, not retail. Two years ago we bought a 97 Explorer from an individual and at the time we thought we were getting a great deal, it booked alot higher than we paid, but the books lie! You may go to cars.com and get the Black book value, the dealers use this and you might get a more acurrate value. With used cars flooding the market right now, going to a dealer may be a better way to make sure you dont end up upside down!
I'd have to agree with most of the above as to either making an offer not higher then $17500, if it's perfect, but preferably about $16k. It sounds like a well taken care of, great SUV that you would enjoy. I have freinds who have 97 5.4L's, one with 165,000 miles and the other with 134,000 miles who rave about the durablity of these things. They think that 200,000 plus miles is an easy expectation (if you keep up with the preventative maintenance). I have read on here of troubles that some have had with their Expys, but know many others, personally that enjoy many trouble free miles. Do some research and shop around. You'll love the Expy.
The bottom line is the asking price is just to high. There are just to many good 99's and now 2000 models coming of lease with low miles and remainder of factory warranty there that can be had for the same $20k
I got mine loaded with all the options, perfect condition, AutoFax clean title history, 23k miles & 13 months remaining warranty in September for $18k.

Its not worth it. I just purchased my 97 Exp. for 18,000 and it only had 55,000 on it, and it had the same options as the one you are looking at with an extended warranty.

Well i bought a 2000 Expy XLT loaded
5.4 Triton V8 with 34,400 miles on it

DONT SPEND THAT MUCH ON A 97 look around
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Mar-02 AT 01:03 PM (EST)]99 XLT loaded with 51k on it, 4.6 for $18,500. Bank valued it at $23,500. My only suggestion, get the 5.4L whatever you get.
The more I drive the 4.6, the more I am not satisfied with the juice it has.....
For comparison, we bought our '97 XLT at a Ford dealer here in Denver, one of the most expensive places to live. It had 78k on it when we drove it home, and we got it for $14k. I have seen many on lots for $17-$21k, and wondered what was wrong with this one. It is very clean, two minor scratches on the roof (not usually noticeable), and runs great. It just happened that the dealer had it on the lot too long, and needed to get rid of it. This was during the 0% financing, so everyone else was buying a new car.
