Starting on my son's 52 F1 tomorrow on the front end. Have to replace king pens that I dread trying to do because of all I have read about how hard they are to get out. Took pics so we know where everything goes back in the right place. He is having his frame acid washed and painted next weekend so we have to get it ready before then. (anyone want to help)! LOL Hope the king pens aren't to bad they have been in there a long long time. Don't know the first thing about doing them so I guess we will go by trile and error. Any feed back will be greatly used.
I did mine a few months ago and rebuilt my front end as well - kingpins, tie rob ends, drag link, new front axel, springs, pins and bushings. Here's the link:
I'll bet you $10 that after you remove the retaining bolts, you are able to tap the king pins from the bottum with a hammer and punch, and they pop right out!
I was really worried about doing this work, was clueless, and it turned out to be VERY simple. Just follow the proceedure in the shop manual.
A couple of lessons learned: There is a little bearing that goes between the axel and the spindle - it goes flat side (like a cover) down!
Second, take the spindles and bushings with kingpins to a machine shop and have them wet honed to size instead of reamed. Much better results.
Trust me -you'll be fine!
PS Spring work made all the difference - I'd do some new bolts and bushings there too!
Well Julies you were right on one of the king pins but the other side we have hammered on it for about two hours and it hasn't buged not one bit. I will give it another try tomorrow and if it doesn't move can I heat it up and try and punch it out? The heat won't destroy anything will it. Wish me luck or if you have other advice please let me know.
Get a metal shaft slightly smaller than the kingpin and put it under the kingpin on the side that is stuck. Then let your jack down on it slowly and try using the weight of the truck to push it out while tapping on the top of the axel. Don't overheat it (no red metal)and heat it evenly
I could not get either one of mine to come out when I rebuilt them. I took the whole axle down to the machine shop and they had both out in a couple of minutes with there press. They offered a good price for honing and install, so I left it there and came back for it the next day. Some things just aren't worth fighting with.
