Ok this might have been asked before. This is a 2001 Expedition Eddie Baur 4wd with the 5.4L. But since this is only my second Expo I am curious what this part is. Behind the rear tire right before the exhuast tip it looks to have a second muffler. I know up underneath their is a long muffler. So why 2 mufflers? and the second question is can i take one of them out to help with fuel mileage and or performance? I know my 2000 expo with the 4.6L did not have it so, Curious what is or used for?
It's a resonator and it's function is to reduce the exhaust noise even further than the muffler does. There is no resistance caused by the resonator, so removing it will not give you any benefit.
Yeah but it is ugly!!! Anyone on here cut it off? When did they start putting them on? My uncle has a 2001 Eddie Baur with a 5.4L 4wd and his Expo does not have one. Just kinda curious here.

The resonator does just that, allow the exhaust note space to resonate into a softer tone. I took the mufflers off of my Mark VIII and straight piped it, I just got a deeper more mellow sounding exhaust. The cats seem to do a lot in muffling the sound. Saved about 70 lbs. in weight . Now it's back to stock.
I had the muffler and resonator cut off and put a Flowmaster SUV muffler in their place. Made a big difference. Combined with the K&N filter I am averaging 16mpg now, an increase of 3.5mpg. I went on a road trip last week and at 75-80mph WITH a/c on I averaged 18.2mpg. That is with a 4.6 and a 2wd.

That is some very good results from a couple of fairly inexpensive and easy modifications. Good for you.
I'm considering a Hush Thrush muffler on my Navigator an probably a Y pipe after the muffler for appearance sake. If I get a mileage gain I'll be very happy.

How do you find the sound compared to the stock resonator-and-muffler setup?
