oil pressure dropping

i have a 2000 f-250 with a 7.3 and am having an issue with oil pressure. once the vehicle warms up to operating temp. i lose oil pressure at idle but once i accelerate and get rpms above 900 my oil pressure is fine. i have put in an oil pressure gauge to make sure not trusting the idiot gauge in truck. i have also changed the low pressure oil pump on the bottom front of motor and no change. i also just did another oil change and no change. i have checked the by-pass on the filter housing and it seems fine. i am nearing my wits end. any suggestions will be welcome. i am hoping that it is not the pick up tube as i have heard this is a pita to change. thanks again in advance.

Welcome to FTE. First, you should check out our 99 - 03 7.3 diesel section located further down the main forum listing. Next, how have you determined you're losing oil pressure? How low does the pressure drop? If you've changed your LPOP, are you sure you just don't have a bad EOP (engine oil pressure) sensor?

The 7.3 uses a HEUI system, so if your oil pressure drops off too much, the injectors lose oil pressure and don't fire properly. Is your engine running rough when the pressure drops? If you're just relying on the dummy gauge on the dash, you'll need to stick a mechanical gauge in there to get an accurate reading.

Are you sure you're not having a high pressure oil issue? Acting up with a warm engine kind of sounds like a sticking IPR. We'll need more info on your symptoms and what you've done so far before we can really offer too much advice.

Thanks for the follow up. Sorry he had to replace the block. How did we go from low oil pressure at idle but fine over 900 rpm's to bad cam bearings and a new short (or long) block?

the truck ran perfect gauges would read very low at idle as soon as you would give it some go pedal the oil pressure would come up replaced the sending unit and oil pump and no change sent it to a shop they pulled the pan and found cam bearings in the pan never knocked or made any funny noise the guy that did the work said he never seen this the hole time he has been open and 8k later he has a long block
