my wife and i are buying an 02 explorer 4.0 and the engine revs to about 3-3500 on the tach before it shifts. other than that it drives wonderful. should we be concerned with it or should i take it to the stealership to see if it has been recalled for the trans and get it fixed if it hasn't already been.
shift point really depends on how hard you got your foot in the throttle. this is a smaller motor than your V8 or V10 so it does rev a little higher. My F150 normally shifts about 2200-2400. THe explorer shifts more like 2800 rpm. I dont stick my foot in it too much. If you accelerate faster than i do, you could make it shift over 3000 RPM.
Just make sure there is no slipping between shifts.
doesn't slip, it actually has a firm shift, its the rpm's that concern me. when shifting from first to second theres only a 200 rpm drop then it climbs to about 3200 rpm before shifting to third with a 1k drop in rpm then to forth at 2600 rpm but it shifts smooth and firm responds nicely.
Keep in mind the Explorer has a 5 speed automatic transmission, not a 4 speed. I went from a v8 F150 to this v6 Sport Trac and the shifting difference really took some getting used to. The 5 speed keeps the rpms up while going through the gears but how HIGH the rpms are is relative to the pressure on your right foot.
The first time I drove my ST my thoughts were "oh crap, what's wrong with this transmission". It actually works well, especially if you hook a load to it.
