It made it so much easier to change the pump on the Firebird that I would not hesitate to do it for the Aerostar.
3 things I would recommend.
Measure, measure and measure again. You want to find the pump on the first try at cutting the hatch.
Silicone whatever hatch you make (CO will kill you).
Use rivets, if the clearance is very close under the hatch.
I had to replace the pump on my 87 Mustang in 1994. I suspect that it failed partly because I allowed it to run too low a couple of times, and used the wrong fuel additives. But I was more careful since, and have had no need to do it again. It was a real pain to siphon the gas out, as the tank has baffles inside.
