Fuel pump question

Hey guys is there any difference between 2wd and 4wd fuel pumps? The only visible difference is that the inlet and outlet locations are reversed and face in different directions.
I noticed my pump is the 2wd version, I think it's bad and would like to replace with correct 4wd if there's any real reason to, otherwise I'll just put on another 2wd pump.

-other question, any other reason I'd be getting no fuel to the carb than a bad pump? Tank has fuel and I replaced the rubber line & filter leading into the carb.

Yeah, found the specs for both and the psi and gpm is the same. Already have the 4wd version on order so that's what'll get put in. Still wonder why they even had a difference?

Hey is there any trick to replacing the pump? I can't find my old Haynes manual and I'm too cheap to buy one. Doesn't the engine have to be at tdc on #1 cylinder or something? (351m)

I thought it was something about the cam lobe or something, but I can't remember, will probably do the same as you, should be straight forward enough. Did you go in from the top or the bottom? My push bumper is in the way for under and the P/S pump is in the way from the top

i went from the top...

my p/s pump was in the way to. doesnt take much to drop the p/s bracket so you can get to the fuel pump bolts.. .

and yeah you gotta make sure when you put the new one in that you get it under that cam lobe.. sorta tricky at first but just angle it down when u put the new one in..

thats what i did anyways.. and iam drivin my truck today as a daily.. hhaah

It's the fuel pump escintric (sp??) that is bolted on the front of the cam shaft timing gear that operates the fuel pump your talking about. It's bolted on the camshaft timing gear in an "off set" configuration in order to move the pump shaft to operate the pump when the camshaft is rotating. You can bolt the pump on in any position but it's easier if the escintric is in the "up" position as the pump shaft will not need to be compressed during installation. In other words if you install the pump but it does not mount flush with timing cover rotate the engine over until it does to make it easier to install the pump. Other wise you'll have to compress the pump shaft with one hand while bolting it on with the other. I hope that makes sense to you. Kinda hard to explain. Good luck. -Ed
