4X4 Problem
my son has a 97 f150 4X4 and he is having a problem with the 4x4 wanting to engage when its in 2H he changed the alternator the other day because it was gone now his gauges are going bonkers like its a bad ground would a bad ground cause the 4x4 to want to engage in to 4x4 and its making a grinding sound when you drive it forward but if you reverse it makes a clunking sound then he has to turn the switch on the dash 4L or 4H to fix the problem so he could go forward again it would be great if someone could help us out thanks
The dash switch only tells the GEM module what action is requested.
If the module has a fault, anyhing can happen uncontrolled.
It's under the dash and often get 'leaked' on by a leaky windshield.
The GEM does a lot of other things as well and is programmed specific to the truck build, so replacement is not a plugup and go deal without reprogramming, should it be the trouble.
Good luck.
The module is used on a lot of different FORD makes and years and is programmed specific to the factory build options.
If you got one you know is from a truck exactly like yours, it might work.
