Tailgate question 91 F150

My bed has chrome plates on it that were on it when I bought it. One of them is on the inside of the tailgate. The current screws are 1/2" sheet metal screws, and I'm having trouble with them staying in place. Seems like every time I take it out [it's not my DD] one or more of the 4 screws holding it in place on the bottom side are vibrating loose.

I was wondering if I could upgrade to 3/4 or 1 inch screws w/out interfering with anything? I don't really think there's anything to interfere with at the bottom of the tailgate but I want to be sure before I go ahead with it.

Thanks.

Once a hole has been wallered out or stripped, a larger diameter screw can be put in. I doubt a longer screw will do you any good. It also might help to put a little Loctite on the screw. I would use blue Loctite in case you ever want to remove the screw again.

I can look a little closer to be sure, but I don't think any of the holes are loose or stripped. Every time I put the screws back in [they usually only vibrate loose, they don't actually fall out], they tighten down well and aren't stripped. I think part of the problem is that the strip that actually holds the plate in place is keeping the 1/2" screws from getting a good bite on the tailgate sheet metal, which is why I wanted to try a longer screw.

I'll pull the strip off and get a closer look at the holes- if they're not stripped out I'll try a longer screw- if they are then I'll go larger.

Thanks again.

I had a similar problem, I stepped the screw size up one size and used medium strenth loctite. no problems yet, it has been a couple of years.

Lower tailgate

As to my knowledge their is nothing interfering...unless you have custom applications. I own a 91 f150 and had problems with my latch spring braking. Had to use a BFH to fix it...couldnt reach in there to do anything, and even if I could it would be no use. Luckily the other latch still works. The top of the tail gate has rods for the handle to pull to open it, So be carefull if you mess up there not to block the mechanism.

I'd judt use a bigger, not longer screw tho. Good luck.

I just use aluminum rivits. NEVER vibrate loose. If you need to access the tailgate hardware, it is easy enough to drill the rivits out
